Legal Doomer Porn!!!

Actually I like it. Shows how thin the veneer of civilization really is and how it can be so rapidly dissolved.

I would bet that it doesn't last more than one season though.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('AirlinePilot', 'L')egal Doomer Porn!!!

In the first episode, panicked sheeple fought over fuel hoarding at the gas pumps. Doomer porn at its finest.

I like the show. Hopefully by the end of the season, the show will devolve into some sort of Mad Max meets Lord of the Flies cannibalistic nightmare scenario.

Jericho is the name of the town in western Kansas.

In the first 2 episodes there is only passive reference to a group of people holding a prayer session in a local church.

The Matrix was FAR more judeo-christian than this little CBS TV show.

My only problem with the show is that they make the Kansas town far too diverse.

A town of 5000 somehow has one of everything despite being surronded by nothing but farms. It seems like it is a world in isolation. Not to mention the over-representation of minority groups for a town that should be essentially all white. I mean, we are talking about western Kansas, right?

I love the show, I am just afraid that the show will end up doing some happily ever after bs. I am also hoping for some mad max setup. Or at least more like dark angel without the mutants.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Laughs_Last', 'D')iversity? It's 5000 bleached white crackers who all know eachother's momma plus one outsider black guy (plus wife & kids) who just arrived in town.

Maybe it was just from my vantage point.

I happen to live in one of those 99% white communities so I notice when a TV show has a greater than 1% diversity rating. I happen to think that any of those TV shows about high schools are utter fabrications. I've never seen a high school that looks anything like a TV-school. In real life, people live in much more segregated communities. But regardless, it doesn't matter and trust me, I don't want to turn this into a race debate.

It's all a matter of relativity. To someone in LA, Seattle looks very homogenous with a 74% white population. To people in North Dakota, it looks very non-white.

Regardless...Here's a nice fall out map!

Looks like Jericho lucks out...assuming the winds don't shift southward!

Fall out depends on wind patterns, you can't say whether you are safe or unsafe based upon that single map. It does indicate the general direction of things. [and gives me good odds.]

On diversity, the only place you get anything like the TV layout is in private schools where they have specifically included and excluded, recruited, or otherwise directly done stuff to make the racial composition remotely resemble diverse.

I was joking..

Once upon a time I lived a few miles from fort riley kansas in a small town named riley.
sounds like the beginning of a real shitty book ;-)

Its a village (or it was) more or less and the only diversity I saw was what diversity happened to come as a result of having a base near by.
So that would make sense.

Hmmm jericho

I caught it last night at a friends house. Looks like one of the best shows I've ever seen. I'm super excited to find out I can get it on the net. Figured I was going to have to wait for the end of the season and get it on DVD.

So far Denver, Atlanta, Chicago, Philadelphia, San Diego, and a bunch of other cities got nuked. What could be bad about that? (OK....I did feel bad for Jato there for a couple of minutes when he stuck the pin in San Diego.)

I love my doomer porn but having just watched the second episode last week I have a few issues.

1 - the blond chick has to die. Please anyone that stupid should be killed off hopefully by a good guy to prove that sometimes you need to cull the herd to keep the majority alive.

2 - crazy dude with the ham probably knows that the world has ended why is he wanting paper money for use of his equipment? Real doomers want gold or food...

3- radioactive fall out raining down on the city... Ok you will not be saved by duct taping your doors and windows. Basements are better then nothing but far from safe. Radiation doesn't really care about the fact that it's sitting on the roof 30 feet above you, all that slows it down is being absorbed by something. In the case of your average two story house from the basement up you have

Air
maybe a ceiling so 1" drywall (lets be generous)
floor joists which are not solid and count as air
plywood subfloor 1"
carpet, tile, lino... 1"
air
ceiling 1"
more joists 1"
insulation which is really just an effective way of storing air so it doesn't move
rafters
plywood 1"
roofing material tiles, asphalt.... 1"

so thats 7" of material to absorb the rays. (In reality it's about half that I've never used 1" plywood on anything, same for drywall...)

the recommendation for a fall out shelter is to be protected by at least 3 feet of soil.

most of the town is going to die slow lingering deaths.

Also why do they have to drag all of these things about the characters in? mayors son cheating on his wife with the bar girl... mayors other sun a know it all super hero with a shady unknown past, token black guy some form of intelligence that knows everything, escaped prisoners and a dead sherrif...

Even if everyone was your regular every day folk with no drama going on they are going to have one hell of a time surviving.

By the end of the first month they will be totally out of food and depending on where their water comes from that could all be contaminated as well.

Anyways it's at least interesting so I'll watch. I just wish they would get some of the facts right.

Ha, that's a good one! Gotta send that on to Sandy Berger.

Read the IMBD boards for real nanoscopic nitpicking. I think Threads is about the only nuke film where you'll get anything like heavy duty research in your plot.
What I can't stand is that thumpa bump string section music that goes DUNN! DAH DAH DAH DUN DUN DUN!
Isn't the token black guy from Missouri? Ex St Louis cop or the like?
Skeet showing up just in the nick of time to blow away the cons and then they jump into the cellar just a split second before the fallout soaked rain starts falling, makes me think this is going to be a bit silly. Not as silly as the Postman, or DEF-CON 4. I don't think that's possible.

The show's called Jericho I'd guess in homage/reference to the film By Dawn's Early Light, which in turn was based on Trinity's Child, written by William Prochnau. In the film the US Nuke launch code is something something Jericho. I imagine there's some sort of portentous implication by that.
Got Countdown to Looking Glass in the mail today and Amerika last week so I'm set for a full week of devastation.
Amerika is excellent, too. So far. 12 hours to go.

Why do I only hear the word "veneer" when someone is talking about how fragile civilization is? Does anyone know what veneer is without doing the obvious web search?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that a veener is a thin covering of one material which is usually used to make a larger piece appear to be made of higher quality materials than it really is. For example, a piece of particle board furniture might be covered with an oak veneer to make it appear to be made of oak.

Thus the reference to a veneer of civilization overlying a societal core which is far more flimsy.

Veneer, Webster:

1 : a thin sheet of a material: as a : a layer of wood of superior value or excellent grain to be glued to an inferior wood b : any of the thin layers bonded together to form plywood c : a plastic or porcelain coating bonded to the surface of a cosmetically imperfect tooth
2 : a protective or ornamental facing (as of brick or stone)
3 : a superficial or deceptively attractive appearance, display, or effect : FACADE, GLOSS <a veneer of tolerance>

Its simply an analogy. The thin shield of our structured lives will rapidly fade when basic goods and services can no longer be rendered. People will starve and die, economies will topple and fail. The rule of law we know today will dissapear. Life as we know it will cease to exist. In it's place a raw and new form of survival will rule. Intelligence, fitness, and a burning desire to live on will prevail. Won't matter what cuases this but something along the lines of what is portrayed in Jericho could easily precipitate TEOTWAWKI.

When TSHTF few modern folks really have the where-with-all to deal with it in order to survive. There are a few problems with the plot and story line in Jericho, (fallout being one) but I think the townsfolk losing it in that first episode is very indicative of what might happen If something like this were really to go down.

I spent a goodly chunk of my early teen years being deathly afraid of nuclear war. This planet came to the brink several times during my childhood and only now is this coming to light. Due to this fear I attempted to learn and read everything I could on the subject. I became convinced that as long as I wasn't within a few miles of a detonation, I likely had a decent chance to survive. Only with the unlikely prospect of a total and massive nuclear exchange would mankind possibly be wiped from the face of the earth.

I learned that there are MANY things one can do to avoid danger as long as you keep your wits about you and know some simple math and chemistry. If you are interested in this topic, I suggest a great book on the subject titled Alas Babylon. I believe the author was Pat Frank.

I'm in a slightly ghetto-ish area of St. Louis. I'd be a goner for sure, assuming my city is one of those which are marked on that show. I have yet to watch it, so I don't know.
