Why would company be cutting off its man power – especially when it’s make lots of money selling its products? Could it be that they think future is not as rosy as they had hoped? See the News

Aviation: Boeing Don't they know?!

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '[')b]Boeing Statement Regarding Singapore Airlines 787 Dreamliner
SEATTLE, June 14, 2006 -- Boeing today issued the following statement: "Boeing is delighted that Singapore Airlines (SIA) has announced its intention to purchase 20 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, with first delivery anticipated in 2011. Singapore Airlines has a long-standing and well-deserved reputation as one of the world's outstanding carriers.

The Boeing 787 family is the most technologically advanced airplane in its class and will provide a new level of airplane economics and passenger comfort. Singapore Airlines' selection signifies confidence in the 787's unique blend of fuel efficiency, passenger-pleasing interiors and performance capabilities.

In 2004, SIA deferred its decision on regional aircraft. During the new evaluation, begun last year, Boeing clearly demonstrated the 787's value and market acceptance, resulting in this announcement.

Singapore Airlines is one of our most valued customers and long-time partners and we look forward to working closely with Singapore Airlines to finalize the order to support the carrier's unique offerings to the world.

Currently, the Boeing 787 has 28 customers with 363 orders. The SIA announcement is not included in these totals."

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('snakecharmer', '.')..Don't they know about peak oil at Singapore Airlines?!?...

Of course they do. That's why they're replacing their old planes with the much more fuel-efficient 787. They're not alone. Look how many orders Boeing has for the Dreamliners.

They want to keep flying as long as they can. This will help a little.

Trans-oceanic airline travel will be the last to go. The alternative is ocean liners, where the passengers must be housed and fed for several days.

The aircraft used will be as big and efficient as possible to reduce the cost per passenger mile. There are giant desert fields full of perfectly good older airliners that are no longer competitive to operate because of lower fuel efficiency. It's cheaper to replace them with new ones.

While Trans Oceanic and island air travel is likely to be among the last types of commercial flight operations to go, they will be severely reduced in scale with the collapse of discretionary tourism. Hence, expending precious resources to build and procure new aircraft that will not have fuel supply sufficient for their operating lifetimes does not make sense. Even this 787 aircraft will not be better than about 20% more fuel efficient than existing equipment. That is simply not good enough to save the industry when oil can realistically skyrocket from $70 to $100 at the first sign of demand overtaking production.

A 20% level of improvement is available to surface modes simply by changing the mix of gasoline and diesel engines to favour diesels or using trains/buses at airplane type load factors instead of automobiles. We would best be served spending our resources upgrading rail infrastructure, rail equipment and electrification.

I think the 787 and the A380 will be the last planes built for the airline industry. Those airlines that have the new planes will outlast the competition. It is kind of like how Toyota is building hybrids that will allow them to out last GM and Ford.

Well, those hybrids sure are good for Toyota, not so certain about how good they are for the owners though. Specially the second and third owners. Keeping all that stuff in functioning order after five years might prove a bit expensive. Sorry, threadjacking!

I think that the management of Singapore Airlines is in the same delusional denial as the rest of the crowd. ALL of us 'know', but it's so darn uncomfortable to think about it that most people simply choose not to think about it. The finite nature of fossil energy that is.

And whats the option? Go public and say "Well, we're tired of paying for oil so we quit" and shut everything down?? That IS the only two options. Upgrade your existing fleet to deal with your business needs of today and the future or just shut the doors altogether.

Are they posting a profit? Then theres money in it. Why would you shut the doors on a lucrative business??

Boeing wins border security contract

Unread postby Zardoz » Wed 20 Sep 2006, 03:29:17

Boeing's proposal relied heavily on a network of 1,800 towers, most of which would need to be erected along the borders with Mexico and Canada.

Thank God for that. Those damned Canadians have been pouring over the border lately, and it's about time something is being done about it.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'B')oeing plans only limited use of small unmanned aerial vehicles that could be launched from the backs of Border Patrol trucks when needed to help pursue suspects.

Sounds like a workable techno-fix to me. We'll stop all them illegals with Predators packing Hellfire missiles!

Maybe Boeing can line the borders with Rolls Royce engines from a 767. Then when someone tries to cross the border the jetwash will blow them back a hundred yards.
