PATHOLOGIZING PROTEST: An Exploration Of Conspiracy Phobia, By Carolyn Baker, 2002

"June 17, 2002-In April, when mainstream media reported Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney’s call for an investigation of the events of September 11, I was surprised, yet not at all shocked to hear pejorative comments from the likes of Ari Fleischer, alleging that McKinney must be competing in a contest for “The Grassy Knoll Society.” However, I was and continue to be viscerally astounded with the inordinate terror of “conspiracy theory” within mainstream, and yes, even progressive, media. A lifetime of psychological training immediately kicked in, and rather than feeling defensive of McKinney’s assertions, with which I happen to thoroughly agree, I felt compelled to reflect upon what I have come to believe is “conspiracy phobia” among some of the greatest minds in media. I find no other way to account for a perception of anything even remotely resembling conspiracy paradigms as a kind of intellectual leprosy."

No matter how much evidence is presented the government is right, if you think otherwise then your just a "Conspiracy Theorist".
So the American people can believe the government lied us into a war, lied about Al Queda and Saddam being together, tortured people, wiretapped phones, looked at your bank account, looked at your emails, looked at myspace.com accounts for "terrorists" but its too far of a stretch to say the government did 9/11, right............................

The question is...

Do you love your conspiracy/truth theory enough to throw away an election in order to keep talking about it?

Is that what cost her the election, or smacking around a Capitol Hill security guard? I don't know, I haven't heard, but it wouldn't surprise me if it was the latter, since it got so much publicity.

Hard to say really. I was thinking more generally, more in response to the last paragraph than the first. Occassionally the people of this country in various districts, both left and right, send a real grenade tosser to congress. Its fun for a bit, but eventually people get tired of it and want to see their rep do serious work and make serious progress on important local issues. Conspiracies about 9/11 in no way count as serious, important local issues.

I don't think the US government did 9/11, partly because I think "they" would know the risk of being found out for such a thing would be enormous, partly because they didn't need to. There were enough terrorists around to complete big terrorist acts. I think where the conspiracy is, is using 9/11 to start a war based on spirious evidence (Iraq), reduce the freedoms of US citizens, withdraw the right of Habius Corpus, etc, etc, etc. I don't think they caused it (directly), but they sure as hell milked it for all they could get.
