$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('lotrfan55345', 'C')lick the "edit this page" button on the top.

Anyone want to bother to edit this W|K| page too?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peak_oil

W|K|'s article on PO.

This is currently redirected to "Hubbert peak".

I think most of this material should be in an article called "Peak oil". "Hubbert peak" should be only about Hubbert's work.

Peak Oil should not be presented as being dependent on the details of Hubbert's "theory" or "model". The peak is a common sense feature of any finite resource.

By analogy, if you throw something in the air, it will rise to a maximum height and then fall. You can assert this without getting into the details of Newton's theory of gravity and calculus and calculating the exact parabolic trajectory.

I think 99% of readers will tune out when they come to the words "theory" and "mathematical model". The other 1% will be disappointed by the absence of equations.

There are a number of concepts, diseases, inventions, etc that are named after their discoverer.

For example Reginald Xerox invented the copier and Frances Ford Coppala invented the Ford Model T, etc.

There IS a PeakOil wiki!

Postby Bytesmiths » Sun 20 Mar 2005, 18:59:18

It is running at http://www.PeakOil.com/wiki , but does not appear to be linked anywhere.

I've done a lot of wiki work, and offered to admin it, but got no reply. It's just sitting there.

If anyone is going to admin it, it would be GREAT if it had diagrams. Can someone install Graphviz, please? It goes in /wiki/extensions. I have a version that is (IMHO) much nicer than the Graphviz installed on Wikipedia, in that it allows non-hierarchical layout engines, and text wrapping.

Info/tutorial on my version of Graphviz: http://www.IslandSeeds.org/wiki/Test:Graphviz

Download my version of Graphviz: http://www.Bytesmiths.com/InfoArk/Graphviz.php.gz

I've put a simple Graphviz diagram on the Peak Oil wiki: http://www.PeakOil.com/wiki/index.php/Graphviz , but it ain't gonna work until the extension gets installed. Whomever installs the extension can use that page as a test. The result should look like this:

Image

Also, it would be nice to fix your apache httpd.conf (or included file) so that nicer URLs can be used -- it gets rid of the "index.html" in the middle of the URL. (Seed the IslandSeeds.org wiki URL above.)

I use Twiki at work and put in a simple Graphviz plugin myself (Twiki has nothing official for Gv). Right now, it only allows one graph per word page.

As you can imagine, I am quite envious of your work.

That whole SEED concept is pretty mind-blowing too!

Hey thanks! That's my ticket out of PO! (There's a LOT of work to do...)

Please feel free to make an account for yourself there and log in and participate.

MediaWiki has history, so don't worry about messing anything up. Or if you are worried anyway, use the <b>discussion</b> tab to post suggestions or questions. (I don't know if Twiki has these features or not. They were huge reasons I chose to go with MediaWiki at the time.)

I check the changes at least once a day.

Bulletin boards are great for chatting, but they're ephemeral. Wikis allow you to build up something over time, which I think is important at this time in history.

I will explore the SEEDS Wiki and see how I can help. Wiki's are pretty organic and it takes me awhile to get the feel and organization for each one I run across.

Make
http://www.peakoil.com/wiki/index.php/S ... entchanges

part of your daily peakoil.com reading.

And please go there and add tons of content. I've set up a possible framework for the thing so far.

Make sure to check the "Discussion" tab along the top of each page. This will allow us to chat about how we want a page to develop.

I have suggested a more conservative tone for the theory and allow more of a speculative nature on the consequences side. I’ve included a spot for adding planning links.

Lets stop talking here about it and go to the wiki and start adding stuff. *grin*

Wikipedia challenge to non-english speakers

Postby Tuike » Wed 13 Apr 2005, 09:05:03

Ok here's the deal. Write an article about peak oil in your native tongue and publish it in Wikipedia. The english language version is very well written, you could translate that if you don't necessarily want to make a completely localized version.

English version of peak oil article:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hubbert_peak

Bonus challenge:
Try to make your article appear in your languages Wikipedias front page as a featured article. I have already succeded in making the finnish version a featured article. It has not yet appeared on the front page but sometime it will.

Hehe, good work..
I have troubles translating "peak oil" term itself to my language.. It sounds stupid if I translate it literally, even newspapers don't know how to translate it to make it sound well..
Translations that are short doesnt make sense, and translations that make sense are too long/clumsy/hard to remember..

Peak oil entry in Wikipedia

Postby Raxozanne » Thu 26 May 2005, 08:27:39

I just came across this today (I didn't think that the Wikipedia would have an entry for peak oil so I didn't bother looking before).

I thought it would be beneficial to people who have recently joined Peakoil.com although I found it a very interesting read that explained the concepts of alternatives, hubberts peak, the 'market solution' etc.

Here is the link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peak_Oil
Hello, my name is Rax. I live in the Amazon jungle with a bunch of women. We are super eco feminists and our favourite passtimes are dangling men by their ankles and discussing peak oil. - apparently

The problem is, of course, that not only is economics bankrupt, but it has always been nothing more than politics in disguise... economics is a form of brain damage.

I like that site. I've used it as an intro to the topic with people. It is just optimistic enough about stuff like nuclear that it doesn't turn off the neophyte at first glance.

Wikipedia is open to anybody to contribute, but any controversial topic is subject to propaganda spin. Notice that Peak oil is presented as a far-out abstract mathematical theory. The bottom 90% of the article is Michael Lynch stuff.

Read the discussion page to see what is going into the Wikipedia article.

Check out the Israel related articles and their discussion pages to see the nasty infighting that goes into making a Wikipedia article.

If Wikipedia is going to have a peakoil.com article, it would better be up their standards. Maybe one of us should volunteer to do it right.
