Comic Books and Peak Oil

So, how many people in this forum have a comic book collection in their basement gathering dust?

I have several thousand in my basement.

The question is, how much will a comic book that is 50 years old and worth thousands of dollars be worth 50 years from now?

Is now the time to sell your comic book collection? Would the same apply for other collectibles such as baseball cards, stamps, etc.?

It depends on your constitution;

Would you have a quick read of the comic and have a laugh before you use it to start your wood burner, or would you cry over the fact that you are burning one of a limited edition Beano annual?

Got any 60's vintage Mad Magazine? I used to love those things. When I got a little older, it was P. J. O'Rourke's National Lampoon. After that, Zap Comix.

Yep, got some old issues of Mad in excellent condition. Folding the back cover of Mad to create another image was amusing.

The reason that people can pay thousands of dollars for a comic book is because they can afford to pay a premium for the nostalga factor. They can afford to pay because of the excess energy they have at their command in relationship to the energy needed to provide them necessities.

When this excess energy no longer exist and most people cannot command even enough energy to provide a meagher life, there will be no more big prices being paid for nostalga. You comic books will be valuable only for their function, which may just as well be for a fire starter or for the entertainment value it had to its original buyer.

This will likely be true of the value for all antiques and collectivles. Their value will drop to their value based on quality, condition, and functional use with little or no value for antiquity or nostalga. Just think of the beanie baby price bubble of a few years ago, and subsequent price collapse.

I have wrestled with that question myself. Most of my old collection consists of 70' through 80's Fantastic Four and Avengers. My Uncle Mike had every relivant Marvel comic made from 1964 to 1972 FF, Avengers, Conan, Thor, etc. but sold them off to pay for college. I do remember in the summer of 1983 he loaned me a stack of Marvel Triple Action, Vintage FF, Alpha Flight, and the grandaddy of them all,Tales to Astonish, which had the first appearance of Daredevil and Ironman.

PMS-PJ O'Rourke is a very good read. As Nixon once wrote"Weither you agree with him or not, he writes a hell of a piece".

Just imagine a 1961 issue that hasn't been folded, wrapped in celophane! I'll bet that would be worth a lot. That was the first thing I did as a kid: fold the back cover.
