So Long To The Restaraunt

Unread postby PenultimateManStanding » Sat 09 Sep 2006, 00:35:13

We thought it was going to be a month ago. The waitresses are gone, there's only been one cook for a month plus the owner who also cooks and now that cook is gone. No dishwasher or prep guys. Just one other driver and me, that's all now. The landlord hasn't been payed for a few months and the eviction papers are going through the courts. Bank loan hasn't been paid and has fallen back on the old owner. Right now it's just day to day, to make a few more bucks and then owner is off to bankruptcy court and then a new job he has lined up in a casino. That place used to be hopping two-three years ago. Some goofy stuff now: no large boxes, so they tell people they'll have to give them two ten-inch pizzas instead of a 16-inch pizza and these idiots buy it. Their stomaches will tell them later they were gypped. I try to explain to the owner and his wife that two 10 inch pizzas are not "more" than a 16 inch pizza. She's no good at math and he doesn't care because this is the last weekend. She says, "No, two ten inchers are twenty inches". Somebody calls up with a complaint about something or other and the owner says, "OK, I'll give you 30% off on your next order". His wife had been uptight because this last Friday was very busy (we've had an old and very good accordion player coming in on Fridays and he's quite popular, many come because of him) and she's the only waitress, but now she rolls her eyes and laughs. I was leaving then and said, "Why didn't you give 'em 50% off?" Unless that last cook who disappeared shows up again, this weekend is it. Because the cook is gone, I'm going to fill in for this one last Saturday and Sunday. I've worked there for 10 years. (for you newer readers, I've commented on this restaraunt for a long time now.)

precisely! The husband is smart, and she's nice, but I certainly wasn't going to try and tell her about pi. Damn, I must have started ten threads about that place. All those Brazilian driver chicks! I will miss it. But I'm going to call a number I've got for an after-school tutoring place and see if I can do that now for my income supplement.

Sucks PMS. That's a big part of your life to part with.

Sorry to hear about the restaurant, PMS...

I wonder if you've ever heard of CCA? The initials stand for Club Corporation of America. It was founded something like 30 years ago as a private corporation that owned a series of country clubs, city clubs, and golf resorts - mainly in the U.S., but in other countries as well. It was valued at well over a billion.

The founder died, and his son took over. The corporation continued to grow. But there has been a recent development - it has been put up for sale through Goldman (according to my sources).

Fundamentally, CCA and your restaurant depend on the same sort of disposable income, perhaps from different market segments. But isn't it odd that the owner of such a large and successful organization appears to be liquidating at the same time your restaurant is declining?

No, I realize there may not be any connection. Still, I'm left saying "Hmmm."

Well. we've heard reports in the media about other casual dining places such as Appleby's, etc having trouble. Plus the local chain here owned by the previous owner of the one where I've been is also having trouble. He stopped making deliveries from all but one of his restaraunts. Seems like restaraunts are sort of economic canaries in the coal mine. Our place may have been hit harder than most (and it was a precipitous fall off over two years) becasue they put in a new mall across the blvd with theaters. But there's a trend alright.

Sorry to hear that PMS. I hope that that after school tutoring is going to work out for you.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('PMS', 'W')ell. we've heard reports in the media about other casual dining places such as Appleby's, etc having trouble.

You might be right. I took my wife out for dinner last Friday. The first thing I noticed was that the servings were downsized (about 2/3 of normal) and that the place was awfully short staffed.

The second thing I noticed were the prices.

I payed $62 for two main courses, four 30cc beers, two coffee and two desserts. The same meal would have been around $30 four years ago.

I guess restaurants would make a good canary.

Pi is actually not relevant to the ratio, it's the square that makes the difference. 2 * 10^2 * Pi < 16^2 *Pi <==> 2 * 10^2 < 16^2

Anyway the restaurant business is brutal. Just look what happened to Krispy Kreme. One day you're the donut king, the next day you liquifying donuts into milkshakes and your customers decide it's gone too far.

right you are jaws, except it's 2 X 5sq < 8sq (10 and 16 being the diameters of the pizzas) But if you want to know just how much those customers got gypped, it would be pi(64-50) square inches, or about 43 square inches, i.e about two large slices. What a scam, huh. They got away with it. If anybody says to themselves, hey they gypped me, I'm not calling them any more, IT WON'T MATTER!

That actually doesn't change the ratio though. It just divides both sides by 4.

True again, but it matters if you want to know how much less they got. I edited the last post to work that out.
