Looks like ship builders are doing their bit for energy conservation..

I wonder how it would stack up against a steam turbine burning pulverized coal?

Modern commercial diesel powered ships have replaced most steam driven liners and carriers now because they are more, err.. efficient

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 't')he new generation of larger container ships needed a bigger engine to propel them

Actually container shipping is the most efficient transport (more effecient than rail and trucking). How else can you get those items from China at the Dollar store? Who knows, canals may have a resurgence.

So it seems counter-intuitive but shipping, international jet travel (due to the time savings), will have a place post-peak. I'm guessing agri-business is going to hold on a long time too either by rationing of fuel or the shift to bio-diesel. It's one thing to grow lettuce and tomatoes, but wheat, rye, oats are a big pain to do by hand.

I was being semi-sarcastic with a PO backdrop. PO means less availibility or greater expense for Diesel fuel. If the coal is cheap enough compared to diesel it will cross over the gap between 35% efficient steam and 50% efficient ICE. IOW if coal cost half as much per BTU it won't matter to ship owners that it is 15% less fuel efficient.

None-the-less, the fact that we are using fleets of titanic ships that consume 28 gallons of oil per minute to move cheap chinese made
plastic consumer junk from one side of the globe to the other to prop up our economies is a concern.

I'm confussed is that a Japanese or Korean engine? The top of the page says it was made by a Japanese company but if you scroll down to the 2nd to the bottom pic....there's Korean writing on the inside wall of a factory.

anybody have an answer to that question?

My question is....how the heck do you forge a 300 ton crankshaft out of a single piece of metal?

Not sure, but my guess is ....outsourcing! Keep the clean design work in Japan, and send the grunt work to Korea. Lots and lots of grunt work on this baby.

Actually my guess is Wartsila-Sulzer (German) do the design, Manufacture of engine components in Japan, and the ship is being built in a Korean shipyard.

Does a crankshaft have to be forged or could have it been casted?

Because casted metal is melted down, the chemical bonds that hold the atoms together get weaken, but on the plus side casting metal is a much cheaper way to manufacture something compared to forging.

Getting back closer on topic why is it that so many greenies have such a disdain for large machines? They seem to have this glorified image of "localization" as if the "smaller is better" attitude. For example:
home gardening ...................... factory farming
small shop ............................. walmart big box store
small windmill .......................... a 400 feet high one

I guess greenies must not care for the benefits of "economies of scale". I believe that one of the greatest contributors to the increase in quality of life for humanity was taking advantage of "economies of scale". 8)
