Cultural Stuff, Movies and Bob Dylan

Unread postby PenultimateManStanding » Sat 02 Sep 2006, 17:45:58

We do this here from time to time. Talk about movies, musicians, artists and stuff like that. I saw Al Pacino's movie, Scent Of A Woman today and was very impressed. Pacino is a glorious actor, top of the heap. That was a terrific movie. The climactic scene at the end where Pacino stood up for Chris O'Donnel's character was riveting, cinematic excellence. It's an old movie from 1992, but I never saw it before today. I've posted here before my interpretations of old Bob Dylan songs. I have found a forum where people talk about this subject. http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/sm ... atthewall/ I post there with my nick. There I have posted my thoughts about Ballad Of A Thin Man, which I posted here a year ago or so, and Frankie Lee and Judas Priest. I know there are a few Dylan fans amongst us. That guy took popular music to a new level.

Did you say Judas Priests? ;-)
The only stuff besides 70's music that made the 80's tolerable.....
I like Bobs new commercial.
Ever think to send him a letter and ask him about a song or two?
I know some artist do not like to interpret for you.

Ok cant help myself......

You've Got Another Thing Comin'

One life I'm gonna live it up
I'm takin' flight said I'll never get enough.
Stand tall I'm young and kinda proud
I'm on top as long as the music's loud.
If you think I'll sit around as the world goes by
You're thinkin' like a fool 'cause it's a case of do or die.
Out there is a fortune waitin' to be had
If you think I'll let it go you're mad
You've got another think comin'.

That's right here's where the talkin' ends
Well listen this night there'll be some action spent.
Drive hard I'm callin' all the shots
I got an ace card comin' down on the rocks.

If you think I'll sit around while you chip away my brain
Listen I ain't foolin' and you'd better think again.
Out there is a fortune waitin' to be had
If you think I'll let it go you're mad
You've got another think comin'.
In this world we're livin' in we have our share of sorrow
Answer now is don't give in aim for a new tomorrow.

Oh so hot no time to take a rest yeah
Act tough ain't room for second best.
Real strong got me some security
Hey I'm a big smash I'm goin' for infinity yeah.

and for some reason I have to add

you don't know what it's like, you don't have a clue
if you did you'd find yourselves doing the same thing too

Breaking the law, breaking the law
Breaking the law, breaking the law
Breaking the law, breaking the law
Breaking the law, breaking the law
;-)

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('pstarr', 'I') have to see Scent of a Women again. Just watched Pacino in Insomnia. Another great role and job. Psychotic premise in the land of the midnight sun.

Dylan is the great american poet
Was Insomnia based on the Steven King novel of the same name? The most recent Pacino movie I've seen was People I Know which was just OK. I agree on Dylan. Gotta hear his new album. The last one came out on 9-11-2001. How weird is that?

The band took the name from a song on Dylan's John Wesley Harding album. "The Ballad Of Frankie Lee and Judas Priest". A fine, fine song if you haven't heard it. It's about a guy who screws himself to death in a bordello, with lots of symbolic overtones.

Ha Ha! youv'e heard it! Devil's Advocate was fine indeed, and very creepy. Did you ever hear "Ballad of Hollis Brown"? Perfect Peak Oil lyrics and presented in inimitable magnetic style:

Ballad of Hollis Brown, by Bob Dylan

First Release
The Times They Are A-Changin'
The Times They Are A-Changin'
1964
{ RealAudio }
WindowsMedia { 56 }

Hollis Brown
He lived on the outside of town
Hollis Brown
He lived on the outside of town
With his wife and five children
And his cabin fallin' down

You looked for work and money
And you walked a rugged mile
You looked for work and money
And you walked a rugged mile
Your children are so hungry
That they don't know how to smile

Your baby's eyes look crazy
They're a-tuggin' at your sleeve
Your baby's eyes look crazy
They're a-tuggin' at your sleeve
You walk the floor and wonder why
With every breath you breathe

The rats have got your flour
Bad blood it got your mare
The rats have got your flour
Bad blood it got your mare
If there's anyone that knows
Is there anyone that cares?

You prayed to the Lord above
Oh please send you a friend
You prayed to the Lord above
Oh please send you a friend
Your empty pockets tell yuh
That you ain't a-got no friend

Your babies are crying louder
It's pounding on your brain
Your babies are crying louder
It's pounding on your brain
Your wife's screams are stabbin' you
Like the dirty drivin' rain

Your grass it is turning black
There's no water in your well
Your grass is turning black
There's no water in your well
You spent your last lone dollar
On seven shotgun shells

Way out in the wilderness
A cold coyote calls
Way out in the wilderness
A cold coyote calls
Your eyes fix on the shotgun
That's hangin' on the wall

Your brain is a-bleedin'
And your legs can't seem to stand
Your brain is a-bleedin'
And your legs can't seem to stand
Your eyes fix on the shotgun
That you're holdin' in your hand

There's seven breezes a-blowin'
All around the cabin door
There's seven breezes a-blowin'
All around the cabin door
Seven shots ring out
Like the ocean's pounding roar

There's seven people dead
On a South Dakota farm
There's seven people dead
On a South Dakota farm
Somewhere in the distance
There's seven new people born

Saw another movie today. An old black and white movie with Joanne Woodward and Lee J. Cobb called Three Faces Of Eve. Based on a true case of a woman with multiple personalities. She had three different people in her, none of whom could remember the past. Joanne Woodward was a fine talent and played it brilliantly. Eve White was married with a little daughter and a husband who left her because of her condition. Eve Black was a reckless playgirl who could sing well and liked to dance and flirt. And Jane, who was the central core personality that had been buried until her psychiatrist (Cobb) brought her out in hypnosis. They managed to uncover a trauma that happened when she was 6 years old: she had been forced to kiss the face of her dead grandmother lying in a coffin. After that, both Eves disappeared, she recovered all of her memories and she was able to remarry and have a normal life as Jane. Interesting movie. Similar to that Russell Crowe movie A Beautiful Mind. The human psyche is fragile and mysterious. The strange and haunting thing about it was that the other personalities were real and resisted cure. When the cure was approaching, they both felt that they were going to die. They did die, and only Jane was left. Ponder that a bit.

The movie had the psychoanalysis cliches: Cobb smoked a cigar. Also, Eve Black was always coming on to her shrink. That's the "transference" phenomenon. Eve White would ask a question and Cobb would say "what do you think?" But is is said to be a true story, which would mean a case where psychoanalysis actually worked. Hey, Alistair Cooke introduced it and said it was true.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'I') read the lyrics the last time you pasted them ;-)
heh heh, I guess I am a bit obsessed with that song. You ought to hear it.

Here fucking Here!

I also like how Dylan positions himself now. He completely follows through with how his career and life takes him. After years of inhaling polluted air from his home in Minnesota, he got this scraggly, grumbling voice.

So he starting making blues music like people with scraggly, grumbling voices do.

Fucking brilliant.
