This is the book I mentioned earlier, which I thought was called 75 Million AD.
There's also Future Evolution, by Peter Ward and W. H. Freeman. Ward also co-authored Rare Earth, which I started a dead letter topic about. I notice the Amazon reviews for Future Evolution are 1 or 2 stars out of 5, lots of things like "Future De-evolution" and "Very pessimistic and very ugly," apparently since he thinks in a thousand years we'll be dealing with rising ocean levels, struggling to raise food, instead of bumping and grinding on the Holodeck. Sounds like a juicy read!
