Now, however, it may destroy us all by nuclear or biological war, if we cannot control our instinct by our reason. But our aggression is responsible for only some of the dangers we face. Others, like climate change, arise from instabilities in the increasingly complex structure of our way of life. We need to be quicker to identify such threats, and act before they get out of control.

I'm glad Hawking is using his considerable clout - he's the iconic scientific figure of our times by far; anybody know what Stephen J Gould looks like? Lynn Margoulis? - for good causes.
I missed the video link that prompted the last Hawking topic here, Stephen was advocating colonizing new planets around other stars. Since we're doing such a bad job with the one we have. This prompted heaps of derision, naturally enough since our contemplating instellar travel at this point is like ants working on blueprints for 757s. I'm glad Hawking's now talking in more general terms about our current predicament, and leaving the notion of tooling around the galaxy to our distant descendants.
