$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')he future of humanity depends on people's ability to be rational, reasonable and to control their emotions and impulses, peak oil or no peak oil.

I could not agree more...

In fact, it's what makes me pessimistic more than any other factor.

And the primary reason I'm here actually.

"The fault dear Brutus, lies not within our stars, but in ourselves."
The problem is, of course, that not only is economics bankrupt, but it has always been nothing more than politics in disguise... economics is a form of brain damage.

I agree with that, but sort of a different thing than conditioning the future of humanity on always being rational and reasonable and supression of impulse and emotion. Impulse and emotion can lead to good, what is rational to most may be wrong.

Some good answers here, an impressive amount of information for a burst of pure hysteria.
PO brings out the altruist in some people, too. Others seem to derive satisfaction from shouting people down. Niches a-plenty!
This sort of thing is very bad for markets - the actual news of PO, I mean. If you're wondering why the media aren't running stories on it 24/7. For more PO reading get a copy of James Kunstler's book The Long Emergency. He once remarked that Americans can't handle too much reality, I think that rings true. Look at...Reality TV shows. What is that, some sort of psychological metascience? Surreally phony depictions of supposed reality coming through the medium of television...reality twice removed...and they've come on strong post-9/11, is that a coincidence? Tin Hats, get your tin hats!

I agree with everyone here.

When you first find out, you'll tell everyone. You'll tell them the DOE and Robert Hirsch came out with a study saying no combination of alternatives will replace oil.

You'll tell them oil runs our world. The nylon clothing, carpets, fertilizers, transportation fuels etc.

They'll say the DOE is probably in the pockets of the oil companies and are trying to help run up the price of oil. They'll mention that the oil shales and tar sands have more oil than in the middle east. Besides we have ethanol!!

Things are being done! Don't worry. The free markets will provide.

You'll try to tell them these things can't be brought to market fast enough and will never replace oil.

People will think you're a nut. They'll say: You're pessimistic. Humans are very innovative and adaptable. Wake up and get a different hobby! Don't worry............................

Bla bla bla.

I'm losing hope that I can make a difference in the world, so I'm just trying to make sure that I help myself and eventually my family when they realize the truth.

Good luck Sert,
Chuck

I visited another website where someone had posted the peak oil idea and consequences as seen through the eyes of Kunstler.

The denial responses were immediate. " We are not going to run out of oil", "there are plenty of alternatives", etc. etc. etc.

Sometimes things are so huge, and so at variance with everyday experience, that they cannot be comprehended.

As I have posted before, it is ill advised to spread the word, because quite simple, that lessens your own chance of survival. This is not a game, or some opportunity to gain some points by being one up on everyone else in converations by "being more in the know". This is life and death for you and your family, and to the extent that you spill the beans, you may well be giving someone else and his family a better seat in the lifeboat, or worse, letting him in line ahead of you for the few seats left.

So my suggestion to this small crowd is to zip it. Discuss on this site so you might learn, but get off the soap box to the general public.

I can handle people saying"they'll fix it", "there are alternatives" and so on.
What drives me crazy is the people saying "There's plenty of oil, peak oil is a scam of those greedy oil companies".

It's supposed I AM the conspiracy nut, NOT THEM!!!
They can't challenge me on my own terrain!!

I talk to those whom I respect and those who are close to me. They are either on board or are coming around. They may be part of my community/tribe whatever.

The rest? Well, i'll not lose sleep if the doomer scenario hits and they fall by the wayside.

I'm quietly and dilligently building my lifeboat. I've invited a very select few others in. We hope to be shoving off within 6 to 24 months.

It is up to the individual to get off their own ass and educate themselves. I ain't ur mother. Don't expect me to do it for you.
