Yes indeed, likely a troll. However I'll play along.
I too have made it clear to family and friends what I honestly believe.
Fortunately I have an understanding wife, and being a scientist willing to listen, and so I've convinced her. For the rest, it's quite laughable and sad. There is really no reaction from them and life goes on.
I prepare, my wife is supportive and the rest will just have to go to hell.

I'm finding it strangely comforting how my resolve has lead me to relax about what I may say to others.
I'm an NDP supporter here in Canada, and I am very distressed at the lack of engagement by that political entity. Yet, I'm communicating to them clearly what I have discovered and what I've come to believe. Like with my family I'm quite comfortable with laying it out for them and if they don't/can't react, well that's life.
It's likely a function of age, I'm approaching the age I remember most of my mother and there is a confidence that comes with that age and experience that is enormously valuable.
It's a statement really; "Here's what I know and believe, I'm not bullshitting you, and fuck it if you can't take a joke."
Thanks Mom.

I do not suspect a troll.
I see a little pupal breaking out of its shell and becoming a big butterfly.
We all went through these stages - some faster then others.

Rwwff - if everyone followed your advise - few of us would be aware of peak oil and then who would you have here to disagree with all the time???!!! ;-)

I have seen people play chess alone and I cannot see that as much fun yet would you chat alone? ;-)

Rwwff - yer a dumbass!!
Rwwff2 - yer the dumbass!!!
rwwff - yer a doomer!!!
rwwff2 - no yer an idiot optomist!!!

Its almost as if you see Heinberg, Savinar, Kunstler, Campbell, Hubbert and all the rest as fools because they told the world the truth.

These people do not simply tell the truth no - they are doing their collective best to get the attention of the worlds governments as well as the people.

If you had a family as large as mine that lives very close in relative proximity you would also come to the conclusion that one person/one group cannot possibly prepare enough for all those people who might come and I sure as hell do not think I/me/my group should have to suffer any further because of these dipshits who could not get their head out of their collective asses long enough to realize the truth.

They choose - they have chosen - cast their lot - fuck'em.
Yet it cannot be said that they were not warned - that we did not try.

I am starting to believe that this is evolution in progress.
I think I am starting to like it ;-)
It is easier to enslave a people that wish to remain free then it is to free a people who wish to remain enslaved.

Be aware also that even if you wake someone up with a good PO tutorial, you've got to watch them because sometimes they'll go right back to sleep.

It's weird, but the human mind sometimes just changes channels if the show it's watching gets too scary.

I mean in real life, face to face, or to people who know you face to face. Online to e-personalities isn't as bad, I don't think...

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'I')ts almost as if you see Heinberg, Savinar, Kunstler, Campbell, Hubbert and all the rest as fools because they told the world the truth.

Nah, they made some money off the gig, so they're ok in my book. Not that I'm contributing, mind you.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'I')f you had a family as large as mine that lives very close in relative proximity you would also come to the conclusion that one person/one group cannot possibly prepare enough for all those people who might come and I sure as hell do not think I/me/my group should have to suffer any further because of these dipshits who could not get their head out of their collective asses long enough to realize the truth.

Certainly could be the difference, my family is relatively small, and with a noteable but tolerable exception all seem to either understand the problem, or are and have made exactly the right kind of actions to prepare for a coming grand depression.

The exception would be welcomed if only because they are quite entertaining and sociable, therefore useful in a somewhat more isolated grand depression era economy. Put'em in the market with stuff we make/grow/raise, they'll be the one coming back with the empty cart and full purse.

You don't have to come off soundling like a loonie when you tell other people about this.

Wait until you hear someone complain about the price of gasoline. Then say something like: "Yeah it sucks. But it's going to keep getting worse. Oil production isn't keeping up with demand growth, and in fact it's going to peak and start declining in a couple of years. Then you just see what's going to happen to gas prices...."

Keep the focus on "high gas prices" and "1970s-style gas lines" until that part of the message sinks in.

Then, on some subsequent occasion, bring up, "And you know what else? Think of everything else we use petroleum products for. All of our plastics. The fertilizer that grows our food. (etc.)..." and let that part sink in.

Then when there are news items, e.g. BP pipeline shutdown causes oil price rise, or any similar instance where a small decrease in oil to market leads to a measurable change in the per-barrel price: "See that? Years ago a little glitch like that wouldn't have affected prices. The reason it's happening now is that the supply is tight. As I said, production can't keep up with demand growth..."

And when there are items about non-fossil fuel sources: "We need all the (solar, wind, nuclear, etc.) we can get, if we're going to transition away from fossil fuels as the oil supply peaks and starts declining..."

Little pieces, one at a time, nothing more dramatic than gas lines, price hikes, inflation, and recession. Let people figure out for themselves the implications of items about plastics & fertilizers and so on. Eventually what happens is, they start adding it up for themselves and then one day come back to you and say "Uh, hey, did it ever occur to you that the shit is about to hit the fan...?" and then you can say, "Yeah, I've been thinking about that too," and get them to start talking so it all comes out.

Don't talk to people about this stuff when you're all wound up with fear, anxiety, panic, depression, or anything like that. Talk to people about it when you're relatively calm, so the message gets through. And keep it within range of what they can assimilate at any given time. Slow & steady wins the race.

I JUST HAPPENED TO STUMPLE INTO IT, I KINDA HEARD ABOUT IT B4 BUT I DIDN'T KNOW ITS EFFECTS WAS THIS BAD!! WHEN I STARTED READING IT ONLY THEN DID I FIND OUT THE TRUTH!! IM SO SHOCKED THAT YHIS COMMUNITY DID NOT INFORM ME QUICKER!!!

Just what this site needs, another dependent person; not only a dependent person, but one with an attitude that the world owe me and is responsible to take care of me.

As usual, he wants to tell the world so the world can fix the problem, like there is a fix. Is jumping on a soap box, preaching peak oil going to put more oil in the ground?

If you want to referr to "ASSEs" then my reply is kiss mine, and get off of your and take care of yourself, if you are indeed capable of doing that.

Hey man, don't get so worked up about this. It's not like this is the first time people have cried "Peak Oil". Some people are just out to make a fast buck selling books about a post-apocalyptic future that has a very small chance of actually happening. And oil companies are making a shitload of money right now from tight oil supplies - they have never seen better times. Their biggest fear is not running out of oil, their fear is that people might actually start switching to alternatives and learning how to stop wasting energy.

[quote="sert"]WHY NOTHING IN THE MEDIA??

I think the the media is full of peak oil references.

WHY ISN'T ANYONE ON THE STREETS BEING MADE AWARE OF THIS!! IM VERY DISAPPOINTED IN THIS COMMUNITY!! :x :x :x :x U SHOULD DO MORE TO GET THE MESSAGE OUT THERE, AS SOON AS I FOUND OUT I HAVE BEEN ALL OVER THE PLACE TRYING TO TELL AS MANY PEOPLE AS I CAN!! THIS IS A MESSAGE WHICH NEEDS TO REACH THE WHOLE WORLD!!

Everyone who over evangelizes their own ideas is treated as a nut and rightly so. In the end this approach creates conflict, which is counterproductive. Besides, peak oil isn't the only think in the world that can kill you. One day you'll be out in the streets of Peakville banging away on your peak oil drum and someone will drop nuke on your head and screw up all your predictions.

Worse: news stories on the news boards get about 500 reads at max, and such numbers occur only very very rarely. The average would hover somewhere around 70 or so.

Stories from Africa, when not about Nigerian oil disruption or such like, can count on even lower numbers.

Welcome to the club pal!. As you hear here before, most of us had bad experiencies teling this stuff to people. I work in an IT background, all my colleages have a universitary degree or two (I live in Edinburgh, Scotland) and when you mention this they look at you as a loony, two of my colleages have read enough of this as to understand the consecuences and accept it and they avoid taking to my at work. They undersand the seriousness of the problem but they believe in the magic tech fix, that will arrive anytime soon.
My parents live in Argentina, neard the border of Brasil, were i'm planning to move in a couple of years, and where i'm tunnelling all my resources to make my PO retreat, there i got a better reception, one of my friends there actually got a big piece of land and is working towards being as independent as he can be, so you may get a better reception depending on the people and their background but as a rule you are meant to encounter a general cold reception from most people and even hostility.

Awesome video, I laughed my sack off....

Seriously, give up, don't tell anyone.

I don't bother myself, but I was talking about investments with a coworker, and PO came up....

He is an everything is ok kinda guy, so I said 'go to po.com and read the arguments.'

I asked him 'why do you believe this or that in relation to oil', etc... and he kinda gave me that dumb look.

He also hasn't been to po.com (I asked him a couple of days later)

Don't bother, Sert...

and welcome to the club lol

Dear Sert,

You were clearly in a flap when you wrote your first post, and that is understandable. But keep in mind that when you react to something like this so strongly and get so freaked out about it, it is bound to warp your judgement, thought processes, and perception.

Remember that the future is an uncertain thing-no one knows how it will actually turn out, especially when it comes to something as unprecedented and unpredictable as peak oil. Even so, Que-sera-sera, right?

I was in your position about 2 years ago...I stumbled across peak oil by accident on the net, started reading all the articles, and got totally freaked out and upset about it. Most people when they are introduced to peak oil will dismiss it. I have often wondered why most people seem to promptly dismiss the peak oil thing, whilst the rest seem to heartily embrace it, hook line and sinker (like you and me). I do believe that the real reason many or most peak oil advocates embrace peak oil is not to do with the rational arguments; rather it is because there is something about peak oil that appeals to their psychological or emotional disposition, eg the peak oil believer may be depressed, misanthropic, survivalist-minded, or perhaps has a need to feel special/chosen/superior compared to the general population.

So calm down and think this peak oil thing through as carefully as you can. Look at all the sides of the peak oil debate, and don't freak out because that doesn't achieve anything. The future of humanity depends on people's ability to be rational, reasonable and to control their emotions and impulses, peak oil or no peak oil.
