$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('EnergyUnlimited', '')$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Declan', 'I') would build a small, very defendable "fortress" somewhere out in the boonies...
...Once all this would be in place, me and my imediate family (Parents, brothers and sisters in law and maybe a couple of really good friends) would be able to ride out anything.

David Koresh of Waco was also thinking likewise...

Touche! To be fair though, I was thinking more in terms of riding out an economic depression and fighting off bands of roving criminals, which are likely to be the product of such times of lawlessness.

Also, you gotta remember that this is Canada I am talking about where the government is so unequiped militarely that it flys our soldiers out to conflict zones on commercial flights or "hand outs" in the form of travel aid from the US. The most they could throw at us right now is a bunch of overworked Mounties with handguns and a pump shotty.

I would buy a large portion of Smooth Rock Falls with maybe half of my fortune, then spend another 200-250 grand upgrading those properties to increase their energy independence and security. Then I'd rent them out to Peak Oilers who are collecting on pensions or dividends. Because as recent immigrants they sure wouldn't find sufficient employment to pay the rent.

About $100,000 (500lbs or so) in silver would be nice. Maybe I'd issue some local currency using my silver hoard to back it.

500 Turkish Mausers and half a million rounds would cost me about $100,000.

The remaining hundred grand would probably be spent conning my wife into moving to bum-funk Canada or maybe on some modest agricultural capacity near my new hometown.

Converting to euros immediately would be a good move.

Pay off current mortgage, car notes and other debt: around $270,000 (already own RV and rural land)

Physical gold and silver: $50,000

Cash holdings spread across U.S. dollars, Canadian dollars, Euros, and Swiss Francs: $100,000 (1/4 in each currency)

MREs, freeze dried food, small solar power setup: $10,000

Spending spree money (travel, etc.): $20,000

Gifts for wife, children, relatives: $20,000

Local charities: $50,000

Remaining $480,000: Cash invested incrementally over 6-12 month time frame (depending on world events) in the following sectors:

(1) large cap energy companies: $100,000
(2) international bond mutual funds: $50,000
(3) exchange traded metals funds: $50,000
(4) exchange traded long term U.S. Bond fund: $50,000
(5) international equity mutual funds: $50,000
(6) U.S. domestic S&P 500 mutual fund: $50,000
(7) U.S. small and mid-cap index fund: $50,000
(8) U.S. defense contractor stocks: $50,000
(9) Renewable energy focused mutual fund: $30,000

These investments should generate dividend income in the neighborhood of $1,000 per month.

So true, so true.

Oh and if I had a million dollars right now I'd do nothing but live very well off the interest and not work. I'd read, learn and plan. When things look real bad then I'd buy land and supplies with the money. The interest on a million is pretty good per month and will buy a lot of s**t.

What if you had $242 billion dollars!!!!!

What would you do with it?

That’s the amount the US has so far spent on the war in Iraq ($186 billion) and Afghanistan ($66 billion).

I know what I’d do. I’d by a 242 billion-dollar sports car. But it would fly too…and float too….so I am not really sure you could call it a car.

Your property is so cheap! Where I live in the UK you only get an average house for $1m with a not very large garden!

Fortunately we have enough land to grow food.
