I agree that rwwff has shown signs of growth. Now if we can just educate him as to why the Pentagon's budget SHOULDN'T be doubled.

I just don't understand what yall don't like about DoD.

If the Feds are going to be spending money at all, most of it needs to go to DoD. Now, if we're going to "paradigm shift" or whatever, then yeah, you could cut DoD back quite a bit, and then terminate completely about 95% of all other non-defense programs, including all programs that result in a check being written to any individual for any reason.

But since we aren't doing this shift anytime soon, DoD should make up about half of the budget of the federal government.

At least they aren't huxtering magic energy and turning food into disposable forks.

Why is it that critics of government bureaucrats are so eager to hand their hard-earned tax dollars over the DoD, the biggest, most Kafkaesque government bureaucracy of all?

Wouldn't you rather get something for your tax dollars, like health care or an old-age pension? Instead of more and more techno-weapons endlessly replicating and layering themselves ad infinitum, glorifying the Pres and his hunta. The Swedes, Norwegians, and Finns have learned this lesson and enjoy a far higher standard of living than the miserable USA. The USA has the real tax-slaves because they get very little in return for their taxes. I'd rather pay higher taxes and get something tangible like the Norwegians do.

What I don't like about the DoD? How about pork, crony contracts and very little accountability.

So much $$$ marked for 'defense' disappears into a black hole. No one can tell you what it's being spent on. Too much $$$ + no accountability == VERY BAD. If you believe 9-11 was an 'inside job' this can be partially tied to the defense industry - they need to create 'synthetic' terror events to keep the money rolling in.

The US has little need for 'defense' - we face no direct threats at this point, and the few threats out there are of our own creation.

If you're talking about a domestic police force that's something different.

I agree with Heineken in that the money currently squandered on 'defense' would be better spent on tangible things like the decaying infrastucture in the US. New sewer mains, roads, bridges, railways. Stuff like that. While there's still time. Rather than on destructive poisonous things like depleted uranium rounds and 1000+ pound bombs, which are only being used to cause destruction and sow the seeds of hate around the world.

About plastic from corn? My opinion - who cares. It's always been known that we can create plastics from biofuel stocks. It's not like it's much more degradable than regular plastic. So we can still have our plastic goo after PO. Yay.

Actually, no, I don't live here, but I read and post to PO.com like other people watch TV. I have been fairly impressed with the quality of content here, as well as at theoildrum, which is likely why I've hung around here longer than usual.

It might simply be that the excercises that I think of as sport and entertainment, fit in very well within the PeakOil milleu. I have always gotten a kick out of sports that involve no motors, and no consumables; where a normal person would rent a gasoline powered tiller to prep the soil in their backyard garden, I use a trenching tool and shovel. Where others would simply grab a handful of general purpose fertilizer, I successfully grow earthworms to make soil amendment. Where others would choose to just use the hose and tap water for garden watering, I prefer to capture rainwater for the purpose.

Now, I know I can't go as far as I'd like; modern life does not permit it; but lots of people on this forum have managed to go much further than I down this path, which I find exciting. Much more exciting than watching some game or movie on TV.

Ok so once we have our homestead going I will make a weekly 30 minute show demonstrating all of our permaculture measures and such.
I have you down for one weekly copy... right RWWFF? ;-)

We can make some corn plastic!!! it will be great fun!!!

While I am doomering up, as it were; all of those activities that I distract myself with predate any knowledge of peak oil or any other calamaties. I think it has to do with a schism in what I think of as "sporting" and what others think of as "sporting". ie, using a boat propelled by an ICE to reach the spot where the fish are, seams to me to be quite unsporting; while canoeing to said location and using nets and spears to harvest those fish for consumption seems to me to be the embodiement of sportsmanship. I have felt this way about "sport" fishing and hunting for a very long time.

Even the bow I use to hunt... No pulleys. Sailboat... No engine. Bicycle touring? obvious enough. Backpacking, no motorized feet yet.

About the only change going on here since I've been on PO is the realization that the end of the energy-intensive lifestyle (thank God) may actually occur within my lifetime, or that of my daughters; and I hadn't up till recently connected the dots concerning biofuels, plastics(now), corn price, and population control.

I apologize, rwwff. My comment was unkind and uncalled-for. Your indefensible stance that we should give even more money to the Pentagon irritates me, so I spat.

I agree with you that there are far worse ways to spend one's time than by interacting with this site.

If you really want to move to the next level, I challenge you to challenge yourself by reading "The Sorrows of Empire." If that doesn't shake your views on military spending (and a lot of other things), nothing will.
