Cat parasite affects personality/cultural traits

Unread postby lotrfan55345 » Thu 10 Aug 2006, 03:02:40

A common parasite found in cats may be affecting human behavior on a mass scale, according to a scientist based at the University of California, Santa Barbara. While little is known about the causes of cultural change, and biological explanations often stimulate social and scientific debate, a new study by the U.S. Geological Survey published in the August 2 issue of the "Proceedings of the Royal Society, Biology," indicates that behavioral manipulation of a common brain parasite may be among factors that play a role. "In populations where this parasite is very common, mass personality modification could result in cultural change," said study author Kevin Lafferty, a USGS scientist at UC Santa Barbara. "The geographic variation in the latent prevalence of Toxoplasma gondii may explain a substantial proportion of human population differences we see in cultural aspects that relate to ego, money, material possessions, work and rules."

Interesting. What they don't mention is which areas the parasite is common.

It's too late for you Doly, you've already been infected. :P

Yeah it's interesting how certain organisms, diseases and parasites effect their hosts to further their survival. Evolution at work.

A couple of other examples that come to mind - rabies, where the virus causes the infected animal to go berserk and start biting everything in sight, aiding the spread of the virus - it can only be spread by direct contact through broken skin. Think about that, the virus is still making the rounds. There's also this fungus that attacks ants. After speading through the ants body it somehow takes over its nervous system and caused the ant to climb up a stalk/tree and anchor itself to it by biting it. The ant then dies and the fungus fruits out little mushrooms on its body which rain spores down to complete the cycle.

They do say certain populations tend to have more/or less of it.

France has like 85% infection rate supposedly, and the U.S 20-30% infection rate.

Schizophrenics also have a greater tendency to have this parasite.

I have found this little factoid quite interesting. My grandmother was quite the "cat person" all her life. My mom developed schizophrenia or something quite close to it in her late 30s. No other family history of it, BTW.

Did Gramie's cat ownership have anything to do with my mom's disease? Could there have been a subclinical in utero infection of my mom, rather than the typical severe disease that is blamed on Toxo?????

A curious idea....................

I know I must be infected because I've had several cats and I'm crazy.
