this peak oil thing smells of liberalism gone wild. ALl you people whine about wastes of energy, yet if you had wealth it would not matter. It's always rich man wastes this, and the rich are burning 3 plasma tv.s. Blah blah..... This is indeed a liberal apocalypse. ;) Human nature is at play here. If all of you were making 200k a year, you would leave this site and spend money. You would buy a new SUV and huge home. Get those status symbols to attract the golddiggers and get lots of women. Bottom line here is this: It's only wasting when someone else is doing it. If you are using(wasting) then its fine. Anything to attract a mate with your wealth and use(waste) of energy. Either way, the rich will never stop, and the U.S. government will never do anything. Firstly, they can't and they won't until it starts to hurt the rich. The poor will get smacked down by demand destruction and no one will care outside of that group. Most of you are here on this site because this will hurt you. You are more than likely not making a huge salary. But if you were making 200k a year, you would be in some huge house, with 2 SUVs and 3 plasmas. You would be with that hot girl that is golddigging on you. But you dont care, do you? You can't beat human nature, it always predicts the next move. Enjoy the great descent into the mad max future. Just remember, the rich dude that has all that stuff, will not even care if you starve.

I suspect you are only partly right. People need to live and at the same time notice that something is wrong with the way things are going. Some jump off the train, others hang on and shout, others just stay on the train deep in sleep.

Such is life. At least here those that see a problem have a chance to exchange view and allow others to stumbl on the converstation. :)

I have alot of affinity with liberal philosophy, but I also know american Liberalism has little to do with this.

This planning for the future seems pretty useless to me, and I believe more in marketforces changing people's behavior than in lecturing or politics doing it. (well, ok Europe has had huge taxes on gas for ages, and I do think not wasting too much is a personal virtue as long as it doesn't become neurotic)...

The rich are burning plasma TV's???
Those bastards.

Yes, you are right, Pimp, that we are all on this site to express our never-ending jealousy of those more fortunate than us. We are poor people, living off of ramen noodles that we buy on sale for 10 cents apiece...but better yet are the soup kitchens, as long as we don't have to stomach the pompous windbag elitist wealth-mongering volunteers ladeling out our daily dose of gruel so they can go home to their 4000 ft^2 house in their Hummer H2 with a clear conscience!
Although that is all very interesting, I suppose they could have created a website called RichPeopleHaters.com.
This is PeakOil.com.
There are people here with issues, but you are one of them, so be nice.

You are right. I'm (sorta) like that guy, in that I do make that sort of money, although I rent (as I have felt for several years that real estate is likely to be a poor investment, and my rent is quite cheap) and my car is a sports car rather than an SUV. Still guzzles gas though.

When it comes down to it, the vast majority of people do look after their own interests first, even when they claim otherwise, so I'm quite honest about my selfishness. It's not that I don't care about anyone else at all, it's just that, I come first.

Yep Roger, and I think that's what's wrong with pimptaddy, too many toxic fumes from burning up those tvs. Stupid rich people, they are for watching, not burning.

So I'm a woman, does that mean I would still get "hot girls" or can I opt for a man? Maybe I will get a job

Pimptaddy,

I'm one of the biggest doomers here (I think). While I myself am not wealthy, I am definately connected. Most of my outer family is very wealthy, makes more than 100k a year. My uncle is easily a multimillionaire and probably makes more than a million dollar a year. He's offered to help get me 100k + jobs for the first year and I'm only 19. So I'd definately say that if I wanted money, I could easily get it, and plenty of it. I'm not just secure now, but even in the most doomerish scenario. Or if we find a way out, I'm still good.

But you know what? I don't want it. Instead I keep my laptop on the lowest power setting, keep the lights off, don't use that much heat/air, hardly ever drive, and I try my best to not eat so much meat (less energy intensive) and instead eat more rice, grains, noodles, veggies, etc.

Ever heard of the phrase "Big Hat and No Cattle"?

Show me a guy who makes 200K a year and I'll show you a man who has at 1/2 million dollars in consumer and residential debt. I say this because I review the credit reports everyday for your neigbor the "Jones" who sets the pace. As long as the sum total of all his monthly payments is less 45% of his monthly income financial orginizations will suppliment their ego. To say hyper consumerism is strictly a conservative attribute and all lefties are all tree huggers makes as much sense as comparing apples to rocks. Besides, whats so conservative about someone who chooses a material lifestyle over material wealth?

Go read the Millionare Next Door to understand how true wealth is obtained and the true meaning of conservatism. Then go to the Gun forum and see how many conservatives are tuned in.

This is a dumb topic. On this site we discuss hydrocarbons, how they are the very air our society breathes and how our society will react to suffocation. This site has nothing to do with class warfare or environmentalism, those are different topics. For instance, I'm a peaker who is living it up. I burn barrels of oil in my backyard parties. I drive huge, fuel guzzling vehicles and spend all my money on fast women, gambling and booze.

First off, Mekrob, take the money and use it for the greater good. Donate whatever you consider to be excessive compensation.

More to the point...

Clearly the term Purchasing Power Parity is largely absent from the general consciousness.

Purchasing Power Parity is extremely important when discussing issues of class divide. The cost of living of different countries and locations inside of countries is huge! What is considered poverty line in the United States is considered a decent wage in some European countries. $100,000 a year in Southern California gets you a much lower standard of living than that same amount earned in Kansas.

When people call 100k a year rich, they just aren't living in reality. In San Diego, the average house costs around $750,000.

If you have a fixed rate mortgage at 6% and a downpayment of $50,000, you will likely pay in excess of $50,000 a year for the mortgage alone!

Meaning, you would be left with around $30,000 a year after taxes to pay for all of your expenses...yeah...not rich.

While your point is taken, it speaks more to the 'fundamentals' of the West Coast housing market than anything else. Read: I hope no one is thinking of getting in right now...

Not at all. Doomerism doesn't necessarily mean that you think you will face hardships or your shit will hit your fan, but that the world in general will face tough times ahead. I can't think of my fellow man?

Nope. Its San Diego that isn't living in reality. I'd never pay more than $100,000 for a house. If I couldn't buy one for that, I'd leave the area. I'd rather work at some McDonalds somewhere than make $100k a year and have to just give it all to the bank.

Agreed, whats sick about the real estate market in California is the astonishing annual appraisal values. The homeowner begins think their property is really increasing in value 50K a year thus becoming a habitual refinancer. When I say habitual refianancer I mean one who refis every 6 months and adds $15K to the principle in fees. It teeters on what's called Predatory Lending. One day the music will stop and will not be enough chairs for all those that live in California(and Florida too!). Somethings going to give.

BTW Kingcoal-I agree Peakoil is about the demand for hydrocarbons outstripping suppy and all the fun it brings.

Well then I'm afraid you won't be happy in most places.

The median price for a home in the United States is around $230,000.

The average house in my area is easily twice that figure. (Eastern Massachusetts).

Reality is relative to one's geographic area. 8)

I don't need an average house, or a median house, I need, want, and found a house that does not, and will not own me. It wasn't hard. I told the agent flat out that I will not sign any contract for any house for more than a 100k for any reason.

Guess what. They showed me quite a few that fit the specification. Were they as "nice" as the houses many of my peers have? Nope. Were they as big? Nope. Can I afford to set the AC on 72F in the middle of summer? Yep.

Funny how that works.
