$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('rwwff', 'T')ake a look at production. Pennsylvania introduced us to oil; Texas introduced us to cheap and apparently limitless quantities of oil.

Yes yes i'm aware of all that. But you said 'originators' and Pennsylvania is where the fever started --and believe me, the race to suck as much of the 'Black Gold' out of the Pennsylvania hills & valleys as could be found was most definitely 'feverish'.

Seems pretty clear to me. We'd never have gotten in the current mess if oil had remained somewhat limited and/or somewhat expensive.

Hmmm...

"...the price of oil plummeted to 10 cents a barrel."

And...

[web]http://www.priweb.org/ed/pgws/history/pennsylvania/triumph_hill.html[/web]

"...hundreds-of-thousands of barrels..."

I strongly suspect that visions of "cheap and near infinitely available petroleum" were very much alive and well at this point, more than a quarter century BEFORE Spindletop...

Finally, a quote from the main article:

Still not convinced that the Oil Regions in Pennsylvania were important in the early days of oil? Consider this - Pennsylvania was responsible for 1/2 of the WORLD'S production of oil until the East Texas oil boom of 1901.

I'm having a hard time figuring out what I arguing about here.... So I'll just conceed whatever point it is that you are making about Pennsylvania.

You maintain that Texicans are:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')he source and originators of the true plague of cheap and near infinitely available petroleum for oh so long.

I maintain that they are not. They provided the first truly (then) dumbfounding quantities of oil in the U.S. But the fever --namely greed (ok and probably a strong lust for power in at least some cases)-- that drove the exploration of virtually every inch of the continent in it's pursuit (including Texas), was a full blown epidemic by the time it hit the Gulf Coast.

Texas provided the huge quantities yes, but the plague-like mentality behind our consumption of it --fueled by the boom in PA-- was already in full effect before the first drills ever came west of the Mississippi.

"Plague" is a term that relates to how a resource is consumed, not to the resource itself...

I am content to accept that your interpretation is correct; I hadn't looked at it quite from that angle before.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Loki', 'Y')ou're a stereotypical fucking Texan, and no, that's not a compliment. I consider most Texans slightly lower than pond scum and a lot less intelligent.

You need to be careful about stereotyping Texans.

Sure, there are the whacko religionists and the rightwing nutcases. Extreme gun nuts. Baptist colleges. Violent rednecks. Associates of the Bush Crime Family etc.

However, there are plenty of rather cool people in Texas.

Austin is a modern hi-tech culture. The Texas hill-country is a legendary hang-out of freethinkers. Texas has more wind energy installations than any state in the country. Houston Space Center.

Texas religiosity trends toward the vile end of Christianity. However, north of Houston is the Texas Church of Freethought which is described as a "fellowship of non-believers". And in Dallas is the largest gay church in the world, the Cathedral of Hope.

When I was doing oilfield work in the 80s, deals in Texas were special. Out at the rig, drugs were overflowing. Deals closed over bags of cocaine. Ludes. Meth. The Texas engineer that I worked with would bother me constantly to go out behind the rig and get stoned on Texas pot- I hated to turn him down but us geologists needed to keep our brains screwed on. But he functioned perfectly with a brain that was marinated in marijuana.

It's just hard to categorize Texans.
