$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('mekrob', 'I') got one: people talking about others wasting energy when they themselves are wasting energy by using a computer to talk about others wasting energy which does not good to conservation because they are preaching to those that already conserve.

Sorry, but I didn't think I was 'preaching' about anything. And I used no more joules of energy that I already would have, since my computer is already on and I am waiting on others before I can do anything else at work.

The junk mail example is a waste of time, money, and resources when compared to doing nothing at all. That is what I was trying to point out - doing nothing or not adding some silly gizmo to a device saves more time, energy, and money in many situations.

Kez, it's a joke. :) Notice how I was being hypocritical?

Well, the way i see it, there's different kinds of energy.

There's Us Energy and Them energy.

There's our energy, your energy, then there's my energy.

I don't waste my energy. I store and use the energy I can get from others for my benefit.

If the credit card idiots want to send me 20 applications a week, despite my repeated phone calls to them asking them to stop, I fight back by having my GF sign up for everything on the internet she can get mailed to me for free and that I can burn in the firplace over winter. I have no problem wasting there energy.

Remember - conservation of energy - it's still there, just not in their control any longer!

Buildings where the HVAC is so abused that you're at risk of hypothermia and frostbite in SUMMER and heatstroke in WINTER. Do people really like wearing longjohns and sweaters in summer? Do people really like baring their midriffs in winter? This HVAC abuse punishes people like me for dressing sensibly and adapting to the outside climate.

You'd think that the people who can't handle any heat during the summer would at least be able to handle 55 degrees indoors in winter to compensate. You'd think that the people who can't handle even a whiff of a chill in winter (and insist on sweltering indoor temperatures in winter) would be able to get by without air conditioning in summer to compensate.

Why, oh, why are the most wasteful habits the ones that prevail in the thermostat wars? I try to maintain an indoor temperature around 79 degrees in summer and 63 degrees in winter. Unfortunately, I rent and neither my window air conditioner nor my central heating have programmable thermostats. I've also found that it's easier to cut back on my use of heat in winter than my use of air conditioning in summer. It just gets too uncomfortable when the indoor temperature rises above 80 degrees. But I think I can try keeping the temperature a bit cooler in winter - it's just a matter of wearing more clothing, using more blankets, and getting used to the cold.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Concerned', '')$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('pimptaddy', 'T')hats nothing compared to the waste I see in some idiot nearby. He uses $580.00 of water a month. Just watering a lawn that is in the middle of nowhere. He also has three cars, all SUVs and he guns and speeds the engine. His utility bill is nearly one thousand dollars a month. He leaves all his lights on all night. Every house light is left on , exept his bedroom. The water from his lawn rolls down the street just being wasted. I have learned that people with money are not smart. They view the wasting as a luxery. Like a peacocks tail, a showing of power. IN his mind, he thinks the water and power use is a sign that he is in control. He can afford to waste.

BTW... Kez I am in north texas as well. There are alot of idiots like this guy around here.

Thats exactly why conservation won't work. If you conserve fuel or water it just makes it cheaper for this type of fool to buy it and waste it.

This is true! Humans are just animals, bottom line. The higher prices are mainly affecting the lower half on income. The rich don't care, and they really never will. If gas costed ten dollars a gallon, they would still be able to drive. Drive on roads less crowding and they would see it as a good thing. Most people waste and only start to care about it when it hurts their finances. Be real, people only start to talk about gas, when the price jumps. Then its all this talk about oil, the middle- east and ethanol. Then they stop talking and its like boiling a frog. They adjust and pay the higher price.
Rich idiots will always waste more, due to being able to afford it and them seeing it as status. Demand destruction drops the cost for the rich to waste more energy. It also makes wasting energy more of a status symbol, due to most of the population lacking the funds to waste.

Apparently McDonald's will soon be providing neat little "Hummer" toys in every Happy Meal.. two of the most wasteful edifices in the world joining forces to bring the joys of penile size comparison to kids who, by the looks of things, will never get the chance to actually drive these monstrosities. The irony is simply delicious... big and tasty, even.

Look if ye dare

It gets even better when you see that they have an "environmental commitment" statement a mere two clicks away from this... beyond absurd.

I dared to look!

Actually, the blue Hummer is an "H2H", which I guess is a Hydrogen powered Hummer!

Last gasp of the Hummer industry to get kids to either a) grow up wanting Hummers or b) pester Dad to get a Hummer (yeah right, $60 - 80k worth).

Y'know, maybe McDonalds is being eco-smart after all.

The kids grow up thinking "Hummer good. Like nothing else. Me want Hummer!"

By the time they get old enough to buy cars, there won't be Hummers, and chances are there won't be much in the way of cars either. But there will still be "hummers" in the other sense of the word. And the meanings will by then have gotten all squished together in the kids' minds.

By which time, hopefully, they will happily forego the Hummer on four wheels in favor of the Hummer on two legs.

Yep, thereby reducing the birth rate. Hey, every little bit counts!

Neat, huh?!:-)

Hah! I take it all back!

Or maybe... they're taking it a step further and trying to hasten and worsen the dieoff, thus sparing the planet further environmental degradation at the hand of man.

Best Buy powering 40 refrigerators/freezers & 40 big screen TVs on display. This should be illegal.

How about glade plug-ins?
About two watts each. I couldn't find any sales numbers so lets say fifty million a year are sold, and maybe 150million are currently stinking up millions of homes.

400megawatts if you add a little for electrical grid losses. Roughly half the output of your average coal plant.

I just saw a commercial for a refrigerator with a pretty large TV/LCD screen built into the door. I am guessing it is replacing all the notes that people place on their frig to remember things.

That is nuts.

Yeah, I saw that too. Is it an actual TV, or just a message board type thing? If the former, it's a perfect fit for the overweight-by-choice tv-addicted lumps in this country.

I wonder to myself is to why GM and Ford insist on building those hulking huge gas guzzling behemouths that suck down huge amounts of finite gasoline. and barrell down the expressway at 85 miles and hour with one person in it, about three inches from my rear bumper.

And why people are stupid enough to buy them. They dont see peak oil coming. I see it and I know its coming. Dont our polititions see it coming? Or dont they have the ploliticle will to address it?

Oh, it makes me mad. People dont give a shit about anything but themselves and their huge 3000sqft home with their hummer parked in the driveway, sucking down grease burgers while they wash their hummer.

I hope the price of gas goes to 6 bucks a gallon like in Europe. People in europe are smart.

Take Norway fro example. They are self sufficient is oil production from the North Sea. GM, wanted to sell them Suburbans and Escalades. Norway told them no bleepen way are we going to buy those gas sucking buggies.

And I dont blame them, and I hope it happens here.
