$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')HIS IS JUST THE START OF A SHOWDOWN BETWEEN THE WEST AND THE REST
by Amir Taheri
The Times, London
August 2, 2006

MANY IN THE WEST see the mini-war between Israel and Hezbollah, now in its fourth week, as another episode in a tedious saga of an Arab-Jewish conflict that began with the creation of the state of Israel in 1948, a political version of the "original sin". The conventional wisdom in the West is that the whole tale would end if Israel were to return the occupied territories to the Palestinians, allowing them to create a state of their own.

But that analysis does not reflect the Middle East's new realities. All the wars in that region of the past century, including the one between Iran and Iraq in the 1980s, revolved around secular issues — border disputes, the control of territory and water resources, security and diplomatic relations. Although fought in the name of nationalism or pan-Arab aspirations, none had a messianic dimension.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'I')n the Lebanese conflict, Israel and Hezbollah are the junior proxies for the rival camps. Israel is not fighting to hold or win more land; nor is Hezbollah. But both realise that they cannot live in security and prosper as long as the other is in a position to threaten their existence. A Middle East dominated by Islamism could, in time, spell the death of Israel as a nation-state. A westernised, democratic Lebanon, on the other hand, could become the graveyard of Hezbollah and its messianic ideology. And if the US succeeds in fulfilling George W. Bush's promise of a "new Middle East" there will be no place for regimes such as the Islamic Republic in Iran and Syria's Baathist dictatorship.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')his war is one of many battles to be fought between those who wish to join the modern world, warts and all, and those who think they have an alternative. This is a war between the West and what one might describe as "The Rest", this time represented by radical Islamism. All the talk of a ceasefire, all the diplomatic gesticulations may ultimately mean little in what is an existential conflict.

Abyss, the Abyss gazes also into you."

"The first two wars of the new century in the Middle East, however, were ideological ones. The United States toppled the Taleban in Afghanistan and the Saddamites in Iraq not in pursuit of territory but in the name of an idea: democracy."

ahahahahaha! How can anyone believe this crap? The US is not interested in spreading democracy. If it were, there are plenty of other places it could have started, that weren't anywhere near oil resources. It also would not ever have overthrown elected governments it didn't happen to like.

This guy is very ignorant about the situation in Lebanon. He didn't even bother to read the news of our country. Right before all this massacre started, Hisballah and the Lebanese government were negotiating in order to decide how to include Hisballah as a political party within a renewed Lebanese democracy. The deal would have eventually reached the disarming of Hisballah, if it had been given enough time to develop.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'A')nd if the US succeeds in fulfilling George W. Bush's promise of a "new Middle East" there will be no place for regimes such as the Islamic Republic in Iran and Syria's Baathist dictatorship.

Please! We've seen "the new Middle East of Bush" in Irak and Afghanistan. No, thank you.

Besides, if Americans want to continue contributing to Bush's dream of a "new Middle East", let them prepare 3000 more young Americans to die like the ones that died in Irak, because Arabs will never give up control of their lands without spilling some American blood before. No one that has some honor would give their land away just like that.

How can anyone have respect for this author? He's openly prejudiced and ignorant. So, according to him, everyone who is not the West is the "rest", and is not part of the modern world? What kind of fu**ed up fascist racist mentality is that? Please!

Sounds like Spec's thinking style. People don't get more Fascist.

The guy is Iranian.
I think he knows more about the situation then just about anyone.

Course, another thing that hurts is the fact that the Koran specifically discusses killing non believers.

So when Christian Americans bomb people, or torture them in secret camps, or overthrow their governments, are they following Jesus's teachings?

Perhaps the Americans who torture and drop bombs are Agnostict, Atheists or simply lapsed Methodists who attend only on christmas. The armed forces are not allowed to discriminate against trigger pullers and interigators based on religon.

Please supply me with the a name of a speficic "hands on" interogator and the chuch they attend.

BTW- If I have offended any Agnostict, Atheists or lapsed Methodists. Sorry, I have many well adjusted non-beliver friends who are unlikely to abuse people, animals, or policy.

It will be my pleasure Spec. Both the Bible and the Torah explicitly prompt people to kill non-believers, as manifested in this verse of the Old Testament/Torah:

Deuteronomy 13:6-10:If thy brother, the son of thy mother, or thy son, or thy daughter, or the wife of thy bosom, or thy friend, which [is] as thine own soul, entice thee secretly, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which thou hast not known, thou, nor thy fathers; [Namely], of the gods of the people which [are] round about you, nigh unto thee, or far off from thee, from the [one] end of the earth even unto the [other] end of the earth; Thou shalt not consent unto him, nor hearken unto him; neither shall thine eye pity him, neither shalt thou spare, neither shalt thou conceal him: But thou shalt surely kill him; thine hand shall be first upon him to put him to death, and afterwards the hand of all the people. And thou shalt stone him with stones, that he die; because he hath sought to thrust thee away from the LORD thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage.

Every day.
You continually telll us how Lebanon is not to blame, how Hezbollah are freedom fighters, how Israel is the aggressor. You tell us how terrible the war zone is, although you havent admitted to losing anyone or even seeing any of the damage for that matter. You still have electricity and internet connections.

Therefore, by your own admission, you obviously dont have a fucking clue what your talking about. Just because your from Lebanon doesnt mean you know what your talking about.

Very good. Lets compare and contrast shall we.
The Bible says if someone tries to convert me I should kill them.
In other words, if they leave me alone I should leave them alone. However, if they should try to lead me from the Lord, THEN I should take action.

Lets compare shall we?

Qur’an:9:5
But when the forbidden months are past, then fight and slay the Pagans wherever ye find them, an seize them, beleaguer them, and lie in wait for them in every stratagem (of war); but if they repent, and establish regular prayers and practise regular charity, then open the way for them: for Allah is Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful.

Common translation: “Fight and kill the disbelievers wherever you find them, take them captive, harass them, lie in wait and ambush them using every stratagem of war.”

Qur’an:9:112
Those that turn (to Allah) in repentance; that serve Him, and praise Him; that wander in devotion to the cause of Allah,: that bow down and prostrate themselves in prayer; that enjoin good and forbid evil; and observe the limit set by Allah;- (These do rejoice). So proclaim the glad tidings to the Believers.

Common translation: “The Believers fight in Allah’s Cause, they slay and are slain, kill and are killed.”

Qur’an:9:29
Fight those who believe not in Allah nor the Last Day, nor hold that forbidden which hath been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger, nor acknowledge the religion of Truth, (even if they are) of the People of the Book, until they pay the Jizya with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued.

Common translation: “Fight those who do not believe until they all surrender, paying the protective tax in submission.”

Qur’an:9:123
O ye who believe! fight the unbelievers who gird you about, and let them find firmness in you: and know that Allah is with those who fear Him.

Common translation: “Fight the unbelievers around you, and let them find harshness in you.”

Qur’an:48:16
Say to the desert Arabs who lagged behind: "Ye shall be summoned (to fight) against a people given to vehement war: then shall ye fight, or they shall submit. Then if ye show obedience, Allah will grant you a goodly reward, but if ye turn back as ye did before, He will punish you with a grievous Penalty."

Qur’an:47:4

Therefore, when ye meet the Unbelievers (in fight), smite at their necks; At length, when ye have thoroughly subdued them, bind a bond firmly (on them): thereafter (is the time for) either generosity or ransom: Until the war lays down its burdens. Thus (are ye commanded): but if it had been Allah's Will, He could certainly have exacted retribution from them (Himself); but (He lets you fight) in order to test you, some with others. But those who are slain in the Way of Allah,- He will never let their deeds be lost.

I could go on, but I dont want to post half the damn Qur'an.

So. Christianity says if someone leads me astray I should strike them down.
Islam says if I dont believe, I should be killed or treated as nothing more then cattle.

But thats all in context. The only context worth worrying about is "are the adherents of that religion currently carrying out those commands"? If the answer is 'yes', then it moves from the realm of 'isn't that religion silly' to 'arm yourself, this is going to be a long one'.

Let me ask you, which religion makes you feel like theres a chance of peace?
