TEHRAN, Iran - Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has ordered government and cultural bodies to use modified Persian words to replace foreign words that have crept into the language, such as "pizzas" which will now be known as "elastic loaves," state media reported Saturday.

The presidential decree, issued earlier this week, orders all governmental agencies, newspapers and publications to use words deemed more appropriate by the official language watchdog, the Farhangestan Zaban e Farsi, or Persian Academy, the Irna official news agency reported.

The academy has introduced more than 2,000 words as alternatives for some of the foreign words that have become commonly used in
Iran, mostly from Western languages. The government is less sensitive about Arabic words, because the Quran is written in Arabic.

Among other changes, a "chat" will become a "short talk" and a "cabin" will be renamed a "small room," according to official Web site of the academy.

If a cabin is a small room, then what is a small room?

PHPbb does allow the < i > tag , but, that doesn't work in title area for a reason. Unless of course he was just trying to show off that he knows the < i > tag, though of course it has sort of been depreciated and replaced with <em> just as < b > has been depreciated in favor of <strong>. What really annoys me though are people still using <br> when you should be writing it as <br /> Though of course in the long run, none of these should be used as css is the defacto standard for layout and styling of websites.

btw.. just me showing off a little, and one of the most worthless skills you can have here in about 4 years or so when society collapses.. I really don't think people are going to be looking for web developers/designers/programmers/network admins

So kids if your planning to go to school... avoid these professions

The French Government has a buro of Language standards that filters out American/English terms to keep the French language French. I remember in the late 90s when the French changed the word "e-mail" to Courier Electronic. Iran is doing the same thing. They are trying to keep the Iranian language well Iranian.

Americans on the other hand love to embrace new words such as Tabuu from the polynisians and Uber from the Germans. Even 'Jihad' has been added to the American dictonary.

Freedom fries, anyone?

I'm sorry, but this is just yet another example of abject stupidity. There is no way in hell that using a few foreign words from another culture, especially words used to DESCRIBE something from said culture, will somehow bring ethical deterioration, ruin, etc...

I think this picture sums things up rather nicely...

Absolutely right, it was not the borrowing of foreign words that led the America's ethical deterioration.

In a way...the control of language is a powerful control technique. Something like "freedom fries" is palpably obvious - and hence, largely useless. On the other hand, "Large economy size" is useful. Here we combine the concepts of buying more and saving money while we're at it. It is interesting to note that the unit cost of the "large economy size" is sometimes greater than other choices!

Excluding other languages - or including them - can, likewise, be useful. If we exclude them, we cause the populace to regard them as more distant, more alien, less trustworthy. By inclusion, we tend to bind the two peoples more closely. Thus we see the Mexican language (Spanish), the American language (historically, English), and the TexMex language, a melding of the two.

If the Iranians are clever - which is by no means a given - they could use such techniques to control their people and resist any appeals to the population.

By the way - Language in Thought and Action by Hayakawa is worth a read.
