The most amusing sight in all the world.

What might that be? Perhaps a group of staid professors at a fine university involved in a food fight? Or a group of wall street executives letting fists fly in a dispute over a penny found in the street?

My friends, those are nothing. Mere pimples compared to great mountains.

Here on PeakOil.com, we discuss the end of cheap energy. Quite a number of us - not all, of course - believe that the peaking of oil will lead to a mass dieoff of humans. (See Overshoot by Catton, among others). By mass dieoff, we speak of billions over the course of decades - or, perhaps, of a shorter time.

And yet, we witness thread after impassioned thread lamenting the death of a few hundred humans in one conflict or another. I wonder how the world will react when millions die in a mass famine? And the next year is worse?

Quite amusing. The only thing lacking is popcorn. 8)

We're sorry, but due to the food shortage popcorn is no longer available.

No doubt the corn went towards ethanol. Pity.

But, on the bright side, at least I'll get my fiber. Which I'll probably need with those MREs.... 8)

Oh yes, absolutely hilarious now you mention it.

There is a difference in knowing people will die and seeing acts of barbarity being cheered. I'll still pity those who herald the destruction of a people when they are dying of starvation and pestilence. Thats if I see it of course.

There's a lot of machismo in the attidue to war on these boards. I for one get more angry than I should. Bit like suffering from road rage. pointless.

Well thanks to the Patriot Act II,I found a new way to serve my country when I am no longer here on Earth. It's very similar to donating a organ or kidney. Don't be part of the problem- the solution is within all of us. In fact if you get chipped today, you will recieve $100 in Olive Garden vouchers and this poly/cotton t-shirt.

Just because it's inevitable doesn't mean that it's not tragic.

People really do lack proportion when it comes to death. We go ballistic when a few thousand are killed in an attack, yet don't bat at eye at things like the 40,000 who die every year in US car accidents alone. Want to spend billions making the country safer? You'll save a lot more lives going after drunk drivers than terrorists.

It’s like the US Civil War. At the beginning of the war the public was shocked when a few hundred were killed in a battle. By the end of the war a battle that killed several thousand was a ‘Small Skirmish’.

The MSM makes such a big deal when a few dozen are killed. What are they going to say when the death count numbers in the millions?

i think most of it is just america bashing in a not so thinly veiled disguise. most of the enlightened posters that bemoan a few hundred deaths would agree that if population growth somehow stopped it would be better for all of us. i dont get the double standard. there so called compassion is shortsighted and will only drive us further into overshoot.

apathy and a cold heart may very well be a virtue in the coming years.

Some day, Jack will die.

Now stop laughing and cheering. You know that's not nice.

It is inevitable - but tragic? No, it is simply the way things are. Perhaps, if some belief systems are correct, it's a good thing. Or perhaps the grave leads nowhere but oblivion. But whatever the case, it is and it cannot be changed.

Among animals - cute animals with fluffy coats and big brown eyes - we see death and dieoff. It is the way things are - hard coded into the genetics of the animals and the reality of the world.

And with humans - we war. We have killed and do kill - and will kill - for any number of reasons. Sometimes, for no reason. It is in us and part of us. It has ever been thus. So long as human beings are human, it will continue.

Perhaps the most amusing part of the whole situation is the emotional loading. Suppose I say:

Yesterday, in country X, 10,000 people died. Many of them were children. Some were infants in the arms of their mothers.

I then go on to say:

What a terrible tragedy! How awful! Oh, the poor children. I grieve for them. My heart bleeds for them.

Nonsense, isn't it? I don't know them. Their life or death gains me nothing - nor does it cost me anything. Perhaps I feel such emotions, but one must ask what they are based upon.

Or, I might say:

Hey, that's great! They deserved it! Too bad is wasn't three times as many. Yay! Whoopee! Kewl!

The emotional response (assuming it to be sincere) is, again, purest nonsense. Once again, there is no basis for such emotions.

As I asked at the beginning - if people are so sensitive, so delicate, that they rage at one another over present events, then what will they do when real death and destruction strikes?

Something to ponder between handfulls of popcorn.

Care for some? It really is quite a show. 8)

apathy and a cold heart is a virtue today if you're in an area that can use them. Not many CEO's get where they are because they are so great at keeping everyone happy.

Uproar with 18 were killed in Mogadishu, what's the tally in Iraq now? More than 2600?

Note I was limiting numbers purely to US servicemen to make it easier, we don't do body counts.

Amusing? Most amusing sight? I'm far beyond the puke-point.
I know the smell of rotting corpses. Not one bit amusing. Specially when you know that you dont have neither the means of cooking, nor salt and pepper around.

Take your "amusement" and stick it somewhere. I'm not one bit amused. I have kids to take care of, and I hate the thought of breeaking the news to them.

I concur with the general idea that faced with an increased frequency and number of deaths, the normally sympathetic mind becomes desensitized to it.

However, I must point out the fact that there are many, many more threads on this board dedicated to observing and/or lamenting the impending die-off of civilization compared to the number of threads lamenting comparatively smaller numbers of casualties in other current events. Even those threads concerned with these "lesser" events tend to tie their way into the larger die-off idea.

The die-off of humanity, while likely, hasn't actually happened yet, while these smaller events are happening now. I also feel that "mourning-in-advance" over the death of civilization isn't quite the same as sympathizing with people who are actually dying or suffering right now.
