What Happened ?!?

Unread postby evilmonkeyspanker » Mon 24 Jul 2006, 09:59:17

I realize I havn't been around in close to 7 - 8 months, but this place has really gone down hill in a short time. So few people here, and those that are on here, seem to only exist for the sole purpose of torturing others.

Looks like a lot of the hardcore doomers have just taken off and most of the site seems to have gone religious / neoconish.

Is this site dying? Are people taking off, because they expected the crash right away and didn't get thier wish?

Well, we have had alot of new posters. And some of the hardcore doomers you list got their own little paradises set up, and haven't yet gotten their cable internet. =) People take vacations around this time of year, not everyone is off on a permanent basis.

As for the downhill part, I would argue strongly against that. The discussions are as strong as ever. And most of the posters your complaining about where around back then, they just didn't have the volume they do now.

I would say though, the moderators sure do seem to have alot more to combat recently. I would call it an influx of people who have no idea about peakoil, but are starting to get the hints and want to learn more. That's one reason more than ever now we are trying to make the site a place a person can feel free to come and ask questions. I ask every poster, old and new, to give people a bit of time and patience. If their first post is moronic, give them a little time to form questions in an intelligent manner. Maybe they are shocked by all this. I've seen people who I Never thought I was going to get an intelligent word out of turn into rational debaters with good points. Everytime one of those oil price effecting events happens, we are going to get a crowd of people like this. Let's welcome them with good debate, and the intelligent and thoughtful ones will stay.

As for religious and neoconish? Not sure what your specifically refering to. We do have alot more posts in the psychology forum, but that's just because the psych effects are getting alot more pronounced as more and more stress hits society. Can't say I'm not glad it's getting examined.

Howdy Azreal,

Well, I remember when I first started hanging out here, getting info there was alot more actual peak discussion going on. Most of the comments and replies I just finished reading seem to center around religion (People beliefs and lack thereof) Alot of discussion about politics in general, and a couple ignorant threads concerning the extermination of Jews. I guess it could just be a bad couple days and I need to go back and read the last months worth.?

As far as the Newbies coming in here shocked, I remember when I first came here and found out what was actually going on I just straight up freaked the hell out and thought the world was going to end the next day

Yup...

The problem is, of course, that not only is economics bankrupt, but it has always been nothing more than politics in disguise... economics is a form of brain damage.

There Are alot of those posts you mention, but like you said, it's been a sporadic thing. See, people do look at peakoil as kind of an uber topic. We as moderators have had to cut down on off topic chat in the on topic forums alot, and will have to do so more in the future. But we still are looking for Something connecting it to peak oil.

Yes it has been a busy few days, but think about it this way. What just happened in the middle east? When it comes down to it, it's the widening in a war that has religious implications. That's going to get Alot of postings about the religious and political applications, because those applications caused oil to jump in price quite a bit. As long as there is a terror or war premium on oil, there will be discussions about the underlying causes of that war on sites about oil.

I do however agree with you in some respects, that I would like to see more posts that are about the straight up geologic and other factors of peakoil, and more posts about finding solutions. I'm heartened by the fact I've seen a maturation process go on in the posters who have hung around. I think the discussion overall is no better or worse than it has ever been, just different debators and a topic that no longer has the shiney new feeling. Give it time, and get to know the new faces.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('evilmonkeyspanker', 'W')ell, I remember when I first started hanging out here, getting info there was alot more actual peak discussion going on.

I think the theory is well accepted here, and the evidence points to light already having peaked and were moving up through the heavy.

i would argue what now is the point of getting into technicalities of peak oil when the reality has caught up with us. if peakoil.com tries to keep it theoretical then it's going to become irrelevant pretty fast as everyone else will be going on about politics and real life stuff
if they don't know where gahwer is, they know oil is peaking and won't be taken in by lying politicians
the best quality debate on here is in the moved posts about the middle east that are somehow not relevant topics, like our main suppliers about to be engulfed in a war doesn't make a nice smooth hubbert curve
