Well, working on an oil rig requires no college degree, only the willingness to work long, hard hours in very difficult terrain (100+ degree with high humidity). If you can do that, you'll have a job in the oil industry. With that money (and there is plenty of it), you can start going to a community college, work hard and after a couple of years, hopefully get into a university where you can study engineering.
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'S')o when that happens, there will be a SURPLUS of Oil engineers (just like in the dot-com bust there was a SURPLUS of computer people and they got all laid off or salary cut big time) so the demand will naturally taper off and the pay will certaintly not be as high as a result.
So I ask seriously Mekrob, do you really think this is a good career path for the next 10-15 years? (ie from 2007-2020)?
You will pretty much never hear of real energy scarcity at the barest level from the MSM. You will only hear of 'angry ay-rabs', 'OPEC', 'the Evil Empire' (Russia), environmentalists, etc. The complexities of oil depletion are far too difficult to fathom for nearly everyone. There simply won't be a mad rush like you think towards the oil industry.
As you say, it is very difficult for many to get into a university and pay for it. This will become even more difficult for Americans as the recession and ultimately depression takes hold of the US. They will be more focused upon the now than the later (even more than the case is now. Even with 100 k jobs prospects for the first year (equivalent pay for JD's or MBA's from Yale, Harvard, MIT, etc) schools still have very few in their programs (Colorado School of Mines is one of the best but only has SIX in their reservoir eng program).
The world has known for more than a century that being in oil has been profitable (or at least they think that). Yet still, so few go into the business today.
On second thought, if you had a hard time with school in the first place, I imagine you will have a hard time going through the U and then grad school. But I still suggest trying to get a well-paying job with an oil company and then go from there (maybe read up some on alt. energies, gardening, electrician, etc). You must get off of unemployment, no matter how difficult it may be in this economy. Good luck.

Legal ways of getting rich quickly (with no or little capital):
1. win the lottery
2. inherit from a rich relative/friend
3. marry a rich person
4. find oil / gold ( prob. need a mining lease of some sort)
Legal ways of just getting rich (over time):
1. live beneath your means, save the excess and invest savings wisely. This works no matter what you decide to do for a living.
Do you really expect there to be a legal, easy and sure way to get rich quickly? If it was easy everyone would be doing it!

No, not really. But I do expect there be legal, relatively easy and relatively sure ways to get relatively rich quickly.
For example, those people who work all there lives at Kroger or Wal-Mart will never be rich. And soon their salary won't even cover the costs of gas, electro, and water!!!
Look at how rich Bill Gates is, what the heck did he ever *DO*?
NOTHING! He scammed, hoaxed, conned, stole, robbed, etcetc but he never actually DID any REAL WORK, produced any true GOODS, etc etc.... Same goes for Warren Buffet, George Bush, etc..
The rich people never DO ANYTHING REAL. (yes they have a talent of being evil and avarcious or else they would never have been rich in the first place) but they never do anything 'REAL" eVer!
So with that said, what are some relatively LESSER KNOW ways to legally gain a COMFORTABLE life post PEAK OIL , Olduvai gorge, 90% dieoff, peak water, global warning. global dimming, WWIII, all out nukes, comet and assteruiod strikes, police state governments, etcetc??
The objective here is to have enough money (resource/energy) to not CARE about money (resource/energy).
The poor people MUST care about money, they have to to survive, so therefore their entire live basically revolves around money. Live to die, die to live. Whats the point?
The rich people also have it bad, (ultra rich) they are CONSUMED by money, and cannot stop thinking about it. There lives also revovle around money, albeit in a very different way from the poor. They also cannot stop thinking about it.
Again, live to earn, earn to live? Whats the freaking point?
I just want a balance between the two, I want to earn enough to not CARE about earning, about money, about avarice or stingyness, or any of that! Yet with all this dieoff and stone age coming, that is going to be increasingly hard to do. This is why I am asking for your help!
Any other ideas?
