Peak oil starts to hurt americans people.

Unread postby Sys1 » Mon 17 Jul 2006, 17:51:25

Article

Scary article, far from graphics, numbers, geopolitic and Hubbert curb.
This is the real life. We are not yet to 100$ (even 80$) a barrel but people (at least some) are already suffering from the coming collapse of suburbia, struggling helplessly to maintain their unstainable way of life. I'm sad for them, especially because i know that it's gonna get from worse to ugly.

So is the bombing Lebanon and Gaza, so is the mess in Iraq, so is Afghanistan. It's not a TV show.

Well heres one american who is not struggling to maintain the unsustainable status quo. Just got some nice solar thermal panels. That should make a nice dent in propane costs this year. If there is one thing we have in NM its LOTS OF SUN.

Thanks for the sympathy but don't worry, you folks in Europe will get to enjoy the ride down as well. Maybe it will be slower, but maybe not. I have a feeling there will be plenty of pain to go around.

I can't have a ton of sympathy for someone who commutes 200 miles a day. Yeah, his monthly gas bill is outrageous. Imagine that. Here's a thought--get a closer job or move closer to your job.

Yeah but thats France, a bit of an exception. The French love internal riots, because that way no matter what somebody French gets to surrender. :p

This map really does look upside down and it isn't just habit and subjective impression. Clearly the world has it's broad rounded massive landmass at the top with these southern continents dangling below. No objective person could deny it! :P

gee, the nationalism sure do come out a spot, don't it?
Don't worry folks. There will hardly be a corner of the world it
won't reach into.

If only the 'rich' could afford to buy gas, I can well imagine the world economy would tank pretty quick.
Jobs?
-how about a booming business sometime in the future when all over the planet billions are working furiously to re-build anything that isn't energy-efficient.

Maybe the main reason they're not rebuilding railroads in America is that they can't get away with hiring Chinese coolies for a nickel a day, anymore.

The authors of this mess sorely need their bottoms spanked.
(and whether they actually enjoy that discipline or not) the fact remains that nothing much gets done whilst the masses sit around and gloat about how their peak is better than yours. Really.

On the other hand, a good bit of brisk dialogue improves the digestion, don't you know - and mass communication should engage the masses with robust bytes of truth - a thing entirely necessary to get on with the job at hand.

Since divers millions of us are busily engaged in the process of higher education (traded on this free and greedy global market for better job prospects) I say let's put all those smarts to excellent and equitable use, and gather up all that astounding brain power to address this most adventurous issue.

For, sorry to say - nobody will ever solve it within the privacy of their own computer station. The individual is a lonesome soul.
(as L. Cohen once sang:)
"He was starving in some deep mystery
like a man who is sure what is true"

Unfortunately, history has taught us that humans have this rotten tendency to fight over resources. (much the same way as pre-schoolers will wage tiny wars over the best toys) until taught improved methods by their elders.
We have hardly come up in the world from that model.
We would do well to consider the consequences in a sober state.

A deep and fervent co-operation should be the order of the day, I'd say. A lot more than pride can goeth before the fall.....................

Not at all, the solution is deceptively simple. It's just highly distasteful.

Reduce the Earth's population by about 5 billion and institute world-wide reproductive controls. Do that, and peak oil suddenly becomes manageable.

The problem is, nobody wants to "take one for the team".

Taking a cue from "The Market Will Provide" whatever we end up doing will be our solution to the problem.

Unless you have a desired endstate you can't say you have a solution that will deliver.
