Can't sleep.. Kept having funny visions

Foundation - Isaac Asimov
The story begins on New York, the capital planet of the American Empire, which has existed for 200 years. Though it has endured for so long and appears outwardly to be strong and stable, the empire has been imperceptibly declining for decades. The only one who realizes this is Marion King Hubbert, a geophysicist who has created the science of petrolhistory by which it is possible to extrapolate from historic trends large future events. He has set up a project which is increasingly harassed by Imperial officials from the Commission of Public Safety -- the actual rulers of the Empire.

The story is similar to A Canticle for Leibowitiz. There was also a novel...A Gift by the Shore or some such title. Both involve people who experience the fall of Civilization and try to preserve bits of it.

Asimov. one of my favorite authors. Read the hell out of his books in high school. Grade school my reading mainly involved King, Coontz and Hawkins.

So to save the world we ought to embrace the collapse and set up the conditions to shorten the dark age that follows from a thousand years to a hundred years. Any volunteers to set up a research institute on Ellesmere Island?

Ahh my dear Barbara. The joys of reading have never been bound by the chains of politics. :)
