Steal of the century

Unread postby PrairieMule » Sat 15 Jul 2006, 15:05:02

I just picked up a 18speed Scwinn Touring bike for $25 at a garage sale today. Needs a good tune up and some minor truing of the spokes but the frame is solid. Many years ago and few less rings around the tree(1991) I use to race on in Oklahoma.

Anyother cyclists here?

Sorry, but there is only one real post PO bike - a "Waffenrad" - originally made by Steyr, later by other manufacturers they got legendary as bikes which you simply can't kill (black, simple and massive heavy frames):

I learned to ride on a bike very much like the top one. 18" wheels.
Kind regards, Katkinkate

The title of this thread reminds me of the french movie "The Bicycle Thief", in which a post world war two french worker(can't remember what kind) needs his bicycle for his job, but it get's stolen.

Just thought I'd add in my ten cents.

If I am not mistaken you probably mean the Italian movie "Ladri di biciclette" (sp?) by Vittorio De Sica, a very touching and great movie, and maybe a bit of a foretaste of coming PO hardships...

It was revolutionary because this movie tried to depict harsh reality rather than some cuckoo land phantasy world...

Last September I got a 12-speed 27 inch Huffy with aluminum wheels and a luggage rack plus one Peugeot 10-speed 27 incher racing bike for a total of $10 American. Both are solid. They have the old shifters on them, so kind of annoying, but both run smooth and quiet.

Got them from a 275 pound suburbanite who obviously had not been on them in awhile.

Had to buy one tire, two tubes (total: about $25) and had to scavenge a couple of brake cables from a nearby source. Also, had to make a few adjustments plus load the whole thing up with WD40 so I maybe have $35 total into the project. Got two good bikes, so I am ready for Oilmageddon.

Going to take the Peugeot on one day of RAGBRAI next week just to prove what a deal I got.

moral: Garage sales=cheap transport.

I like it. That thing will last you forever if you keep from getting it wet.

Get some of those inner tubes with the slime in them so you do not get a flat running over the cockleburs down there. Heavier, but worth it.
