Did you top off your tank because of the tensions in the ME?

Unread postby Pablo2079 » Fri 14 Jul 2006, 11:40:11

I went to fill up this morning and noticed many more people at the gas station. I leave VERY early in the morning, so it's rare for me to see more than one other person at the pumps. At one point, while filling at 5:20 AM, every one of the 16 pumps was being used. I wonder if the current situation in the ME is going to further tighten supplies.

I didn't see anyone filling up portable gas containers. That would be a sure indication though....

Topped off yesterday as soon as I saw footage of the runway craters at the airport. Filled up about 25 gal/100litres in plastic containers as well.

Yep, called dh at work and told him to fill up on the way home, he hadn't even been following the news. When he got home we filled up to 5 gallon cans. I would have taken the farm truck up, but we just dropped insurance on it. Will probably fill that up this weekend. It's old, so it still has the tanks you can siphon. Doesn't matter much in the grand scheme of things though.

When the price dropped to $2.889 here yesterday everyone was topping off. I only need 15 US gallons to top off the truck and to fill my mower gas can.

Gas in now uo to $2.939. Not as big of a jump as expected.

Give it time, I don't expect the price to jump here until early next week. But it should definitely jump.

We had actually filled up the car wednesday without the ME being the reason. I went out to fill up the truck that night after find out about it.

my car will be on ebay over this weekend. a 10 year old renault laguna with very low mileage for year if anyone is interested... :)

You've got the right idea liniithgowoil. I would give up my truck tomorrow if I could. But little or no public transit around here.

But guess what. Even with the price increases this year, year to date I have only spent about 80% of what I had spent on gas last year at this time. I think that's what they call demand destruction.

Why? Topping off would mean I have an extra 5 gallons on hand. If the price went up an entire dollar the next day, it would mean I saved 5 bucks. If the supply were cut off completely, 5 gallons more or less probably won't make much difference. As a disaster preparedness measure, it's too little too late.

The folks who have to set the gas prices around here must be slipping into insanity.

Down $0.05 yesterday.

This morning up $0.05.

Now gas is up anywhere from $0.11 to $0.21.

Stations all over town are a mixed bag. Price now stands anywhere from $2.999 to $3.099.

Confusion rules.

Or to look at it another way, 5 extra gallons can put my family and myself an additional 175 miles away from the chaos, or be siphoned out and run the 900w generator for an additional 31 hours.

I top off because the US relys on other countries for importing +/-75% of its oil products.

Not only do we import large quantities of crude oil, but also:
gasoline
diesel
plastics
etc.

Like Dreamtwister, when I doom, I doom proper.

I always keep the tank around 10 gallons. Since I work 5 miles from home I only go through 4 gallons a week.

I think situation in Nigeria is going to continue to head down the wrong direction as Westerners(like my dad) refuse to go back there. If this Lebanon thing doesn't push the price of oil up to the next watermark, news of Nigeria will.

Same policy since 1½ years. Will not contribute to sudden hoarding and JIT system disturbances in the same way as 1/4 tank people shifting to 3/4 tank policy can do. If everyone had done as I do, panic would not cause the same potential for shortages.

I try not to let my tank get below 50% - I'm really more worried about actual SHORTAGES than about high prices. I do NOT want to run out of fuel in this city! So yes, I topped my tank up this morning during middle rush hour (as opposed to early & late rush hour) and oddly enough, there were surprisingly few people at the pumps.

Regards,

L.

Well...my gas line is rusty, so the truck leaks gas if I fill it over half way. I carry 15 gallons in Jerry cans in the back to compensate though.

I didn't fill up because of ME tensions. Why would I? It's not likely that we're going to progress immediately to global thermonuclear war. In all probability this is going to be a long slow process and I am going to fill and empty my truck many times before it's over. If not then I have enough gas to get home and cower in my cabin for a couple of months till things cool off.

It has nothing to do with the fuel economy. It's about being able to throw the family in the car and be long gone while all the 1/4 tankers are sitting around trying to gas up and running out while sitting in traffic on the freeway.

It's the same reason I keep a toolbox and some emergency supplies in the trunk. I don't want to have to be looking for them in an emergency. I want to be spending those precious first 20 minutes getting away, not hunting for my bug-out kit or trying to get gas.

But since you brought it up, what exactly is the difference in fuel economy between a full tank and one that's 1/4 full?

I don't see 20 minutes been significant in a decline lasting a couple of decades.
