Shine on you crazy diamond

Unread postby NEOPO » Tue 11 Jul 2006, 13:10:20

Syd Barrett Pink Floyd

Hopefully the reason why I would post this here is evident.

For those of you too young to know or too old to remember this is how the song goes:

Remember when you were young, you shone like the sun.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
Now theres a look in your eyes, like black holes in the sky.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
You were caught on the crossfire of childhood and stardom, blown on the
Steel breeze.
Come on you target for faraway laughter, come on you stranger, you legend,
You martyr, and shine!

You reached for the secret too soon, you cried for the moon.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
Threatened by shadows at night, and exposed in the light.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
Well you wore out your welcome with random precision, rode on the
Steel breeze.
Come on you raver, you seer of visions, come on you painter, you piper,
You prisoner, and shine!

I suspect the spectre of madness will rise as we fall.

Hopefully Syd can find the peace in death that he could not find in life.

Rest in peace Syd.

great song

Shine on you crazy diamond is to rock what Bach's Tocatta and Fugue in D-minor BWV 565 is to classical music :)

Love the tune...but wasn't it roger waters that wrote it? I thought syd was kicked out right after their first album (piper at the gates of dawn).

That's right. Shine on You crazy Diamond was writen by Waters as a tribute to their lost bandmate Barrett. The Wish You Were Here song was another.

Careful With That Axe, Eugene is probably the scariest song I've ever heard. From 1969's Ummagumma.

Thanks Syd for bringing rock to the thinking man.

At least NPR was able to make a small tribute... LINK

Atom Heart Mother is a great piece of symphonic rock.

But Shine on you crazy diamond is still the masterpiece to me.

A little trivia here:

During the recording of Shine on you crazy diamond, Syd Barrett made an unexpected visit to the studio. I've read that the remaining Floyd members did not recognize him for a while because he got fat and shaved his head and eyebrows.

It must have been terrible for them to see their former band leader in such a deteriorated state of mental health.

BTW, Shine on you crazy diamond is a great song, but my favorite is Echoes.
