Squandering Energy and loving it!

Unread postby Jack » Sat 08 Jul 2006, 08:23:01

It's a sad reality, but the stores in San Antonio - a city of 1,200,000 - don't always stock the best goods. Ah, but the online world beckons!

I went forth and ordered a variety of good things. First on the list, Duchy originals - several types of biscuits and cookies. (the 10,000 mile cookie!). Then there were some preserves from France, and others from around the U.S. (2,000 plus miles for a small jar of jelly).

And I had to add to my emergency supplies....so I picked up some shelf-stable MRE bread from a store in California. It was packaged in New York. So each portion traveled a minimum of 3,000 miles.

Finally, I ordered a case of assorted sodas online. So bottles of soda will be shipped from New England to California, then to me - 3,000 miles for a 12 oz. soft drink.

So, what squandering are YOU doing lately? Maybe we can come up with some new ideas! 8)

I have heard of a man who subscribes to every junk mail site he can, when the trash mail shows up he uses it to heat his house by burning it in a stove. Kind of obscene but clever too.

I have little model lord of the rings figures shipped to my home from England every few weeks. (I admit i am a sad f..k)

LOL! I always wished I could do something like that with my junk mail. Looks like someone beat me to the punch.

That's brilliant!

I should do that, cheap energy for my house, I should also tell my friends.

If enough people did that, then Junk Mail would no longer be useful as a means of spamming people, meanwhile the people would keep warm!

THE END OF JUNK MAIL AS WE KNOW IT!

You could have two different addresses, and have all your regular mail go to one address, and all your junk mail stuff to burn mail in the other address.

Also, depending on family size, you could also increase the amount of raw materials you get because each person could register for junk mail in the family.

Hehehehe

You also forgot the benefits of the packaging...boxes, papers, and so forth. Plus, some of them include styrofoam - great for insulation!

Of course you all realize that you're conserving energy, don't you? If this isn't a case of thread-jacking, I don't know what is.

Tut, tut. You should all be ashamed.

I say A B S URD, that's life! I've been a puppet a pauper a poet a pirate a pawn and a king, I've been up and down and over and out and I know one thing, each time I find myself, flat on my face, I pick myself up and get back in the race, that's life. But if I didn't think it was worth one thin dime, I'd roll myself up in a big ball and die, my, my.

I'll give an on-topic answer =p

heres my major sins.

a. I work as a delivery driver, I drive 100-200+ miles a night just to bring people food, it's a sublimely ironic job but I like it too much to quit just because i'm wasting fuel =p

b. I get a soda/ice tea every day at work, and use a styrofoam cup for it, I'm planning on getting a cup to bring to use for myself but have been lazy for weeks and not done it yet, so am still wasting a cup a day.

c. I drink bottled water at home instead of using filtered tap water. wasting both the bottle and the fuel used to transport the water around.

d. I eat fast food too frequently, though they use mostly paper products now and not so much plastic anymore.

e. I crap in toilets, rather than composting.

f. this post.

hardly, read my 'prep in a backpack' thread in the planning for the future forum for a clue to my economic standing =p I'm po

seriously though driving is such a cake job that mainly I just feel lucky to have found a slot in the 'system' that doesn't require backbreaking work or 'corporate bullshit'. I'm happier doing this than any other profession I've tried, and I've tried quite a few ;)

it's not even work really imo, I drive around for a few hours a night listening to music or NPR, I'm only even in the store for maybe a total of an hour a day, and even that time is cool since the place i'm at has an extremely laid back staff, no idiot bosses, ah bliss.

other than the pesky oil problem this is close to an ideal situation for a person of my temprament :)

darn you pulled me off-topic too, damn you!
