"I Don't Believe It"

Unread postby PeakOiler » Thu 22 Jun 2006, 13:14:17

So I posted a bar graph of US oil production from the EIA data from 1954 to 2004 outside my office.

A co-worker looks at it and says "I don't believe it."

Serious denial, eh?

I guess there's just no convincing some people even when the facts are presented to them from a reliable source.

Maybe, maybe not. "I don't believe it" can mean different things. I could mean "I don't believe these facts are true" as you imply or it could be "I see what this means. Holy Crap!"

Yeah, I think we all need to know which "I don't believe it" this co-worker of yours means.

Is it an exclamation of shock or simply a denial.

Sorry you guys. I should have been clearer.

What he didn't believe was that US oil production had peaked in 1970-71.

wow, so he thought the graph was a false fabrication, yep, that's denial. Maybe he'll go and research it for himself later on and find the grim truth.

I love the feeling of La Danse Macabre I get from stories like this.

And the fog
Became God

PeakOiler,

Most people disbelieve the US oil production chart. And the world oil production charts indicating a peak around 2006 are disbelieved by even more.

We here at PO.com who see a decline in world production looming are a tiny minority and are generally viewed as just plain nutzo by the mainstream. "Running out of Oil? Why we haven't even scratched the surface. Why we have oil sands, tar sands, corn, switchgrass, the arctic, the antarctic, this, that, and everything else... we have oil to last generations."

Dag nab typos...

You're kidding me right?

At any rate, I haven't learned how to post graphs on the PO forums. I guess I should go read the Technical Support Forum.
For those who want their own copy of the EIA data, here's the link to the EIA website:
EIA Petroleum Section

The XL spreadsheet I used to create the graph was "Table 5.2" ( or pet_crd_crpdn_adc_mbblpd_a.xls.
To download this spreadsheet, click on the "Crude Oil Production" link, select "Annual-Thousand Barrels per Day" from the"Period-Unit" drop down menu, then click the date-link on the right column to get "Table 5.2"

Just use XL's graph wizard to make your own chart.

Or look at ASPO's graph.

Edit: Oops. Click on the link next to the XL icon to dl the spreadsheet after selecting the Period-Unit.

Edited for typo.
