$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('kuatolives', 'r')emember there are 6 billion people on the planet. Somewhere someone is also in their basement slathering themselves with mustard and watching re-runs of Lucy. Sheer numbers ensure all forms of behavior will be expressed, including hacking.

I read a book on multi-player games, and according to the authors, backed up by psychological research, about 10% of people who play online games play it with the intent to make the experience as miserable as possible for others. They are called "griefers".

I think it is safe to extrapolate that to say that 10% of society in general are sadists or psychopaths to some degree. However, most of them don't go out and act on it due to the consequences.

In an online game, with full anonymity and NO real penalties for acting on their desires, everyone of these characters can be a jerk.

Yeah, and you even mis-spelled it.

It's "moxie".

About 2% are pyschopaths.

They simply have no conscience, so they rely on peer pressure to steer their behaviour.

These are the people who will not look back if they run you over on a remote country road .. as long as nobody is watching.

That's just sick.

You should always strip yourself naked before slathering yourself with mustard.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('lutherquick', 'I') don't get it. Why did they hack www.peakoil.com ?
Why hack?

Probably some kids reading an article on PO in wired magazine. You know, the 'fast tech fix for everything' types. Perhaps reality doesnt sit well with them.

At any rate, hacking PO sites wont get you guys into the EU anytime soon....

Do you have any idea how much money is being spent to get the entire public to believe the most vital resource known to mankind is still going to be there tomorrow?

This site totally throws a fat monkey wretch into this machine. Needless to say someone is VERY mad that people are telling the TRUTH about that vital resource to society. Think about all those ads, all the shows like dateline, 60-minutes, or whatever information on the TV and print trying to prove us wrong. Personally, if i was a CEO of an oil company, with over 100 million at my use I wouldnt let a little site with under paid monitors and admins totally ruin my statements. I know its not just an CEO of BP
or Chervon, there is an effort to make sure there is as such disinformation out there as possible.

This site being hack for whatever reason doesnt shock me. Let it also be noted that yes indeed it could just be crazy people who like to rub mustard all over themselves. =)

Those Turks have been really active hacking recently. One Turkish group hacked and defaced one of Microsoft's sites. Here's a copy of the message they left to the MS site. The hacked MS site used Windows 2003 server, which has been heavily advertised as secure in the site where I get the latest IT news.

I wonder if there is a hacking competition going on? Those hackers sometimes do that.

Well this has certainly been one of the funnies hacks I've seen so far. I nearly dropped my coffee laughing when I opened the site this morning. Before I read the text I thought that admin had sudden flash of artistic inspiration.

And anyway. It is harmless prank, probably pulled by some zit-faced overweight teen who hasn't got the social skills to leave the house and has to resort to cyberpranks.

It is even less harmful than the ol' burning paper bag filled with shit on the doorstep?

How many friggen times will www.peakoil.com be hacked?
And when will the hackers move on and produce something for the economy?

Revenge?

There have been many people banned from the site.

Mean people will often post a website on a hacker list to encourage the hacker community to get em...

We are on at least one list I know about.

It's just a fact of Internet life... everybody gets hacked. We actually have a kind of affinity, (read grudging respect) for the hacking community. You have to admit they are rather clever buggers.

<tips hat>

Wish they would hack the bad guys & leave us to telling people truth...
The problem is, of course, that not only is economics bankrupt, but it has always been nothing more than politics in disguise... economics is a form of brain damage.

I'm an industrial controls designer and I'll tell you one thing about me and my code; I get paid for it. Why some idiot would spend their time hacking a website when they can apply themselves to paying jobs is beyond me.

Actually, I think I know what drives hackers: they suck. They are bad programmers and deep down they know it. They can’t get paying jobs so they play around with malicious code. It’s pretty easy to write something destructive, not so easy to make a customer happy.

Maybe you didn't read my post earlier on. Most hackers don't have to worry about money so can spend their time on things they find "fun". "Script Kiddies" are pathetically skilled and might be described by what you said, and as far as we know script kiddies might be the ones who attacked this site. The real hackers make your skills look like spaghetti qbasic. They are like the savants of the computer world. A lot of them also write productive programs.

Never underestimate a script kiddie though... One of them hacked the US military database and revealed some particularly sensitive information... but subsequently got arrested.
But still... they can do a lot of damage to the typical internet server/website.

Err ah, speak for yourself. When I started writing software 20 years ago it was assembly, remember that? Everything was low level and about as cryptic as could be. Networking was primitive by today's standards.

These days I write in ladder logic mostly. Why? That's where the money is.

Kingcoal,

Well, these hackers hacked what? PHP ... PHP isn't a real language. Most of my web server technologies are written in low level C++. with high performance databases based on low level Btree, no SQL...

Most of the internet is running web servers that run "easy" scripting languages, all this, so managers and teens and jump in and pretend to be a software engineer in 24 hours...

Most hacking that I have seen and most viruses take advantage of exploits that were put there because of poor architecture or developed by inexperienced programmers.

Be it software, or the reason we are in Iraq or why the US gov can't admit peak oil to the public, it's all because of incompetence...

Look at the FBI, they spent $178 million on a piece of software that can't demo.

The entire US economy, Internet, and management is standing on a frail foundation.

Maybe the hackers are doing some good... After all, us peak oilers are going against the grain, we are questioning authority, we are still waiting for professionalism in American management with respect to PO. Software quality and government, it's all the same cluster fvck.
