Only if something is still alive is there need for compassion. If something is dead, no compassion is needed. altenergygirl, albente did not show compassion for the dove, he drove right past it and did nothing like everyone else. Taking some form of action is much greater than having a compassionate afterthought of the situation.

roadkill

Unread postby seldom_seen » Wed 14 Jun 2006, 21:33:46

I have an animal friend. A Douglas squirrel. He hangs out on my deck eating chestnuts. He scurries about to and fro, living the life of the squirrel. He's quite wild, but doesn't pay much attention to me. We both give each other space as we go about our business.

Today I took the dog out for a walk and found my squirrel buddy crushed and dead on the street. I gave him/her a proper burial and a moment of silence. My squirrel buddy is just another statistic in the holocaust of human and animal lives on our highway and road system.

Some roadkill statistics from High Country News:

6.3 million
Number of automobile accidents annually in the United States

253,000
Number of animal-vehicle accidents annually

1 million
Number of vertebrates run over each day in the United States (a rate of one every 11.5 seconds).

200
Number of human deaths annually resulting from vehicle-wildlife collisions.

People come on this board and say "I can't believe that anyone would want peak oil to happen...blah blah." Well I don't feel like starving myself or anything...but I've had two friends killed in car accidents, two dogs killed in car accidents, several injured dogs, a severely injured friend, an aunt in a severe auto accident who never really recovered and now my squirrel.

Is there anyone who hasn't been injured in a car wreck or doesn't know someone injured or killed? When it comes to peak oil, I'm worried about the food part. The food part is concerning, but when it comes to cars: GOOD RIDDANCE! I will be laughing and celebrating as the gas stations dry up and our roadways are abandoned and left to bicycles, horses and foot traffic.

I wobble back and forth on it.
I wish there was a way to keep stupid and cruel people out of cars. Some people aim for the critters, I furthermore think some aim for bicyclist.

There is this section of Interstate just as u enter Pen from NY I believe and its a slaughter pit. The carcasses of all types of creatures pile up like those old civil war photos. its quite depressing.
last time I went through was over a year ago and it was layers of skunks, coons, deer, birds, possums, squirrels piled on the side of the road. Im sure the poor things that werent killed instantly are strewn down into the forests as they bled to death or died of there injuries.
The Machine is really geared for death. The only things that is even "considers" to leave alive are humans.
and thats only because we (it hasnt) havent created synthetic Borgs for it.
Im not sure we will.

Yeah it's tragic. Really an undignified way to die.

All the roads now out there have the effect of fragmenting breeding
groups of animals. So we have all these parcels of land that are slowly
going sterile. Not that anyone in their cage is going to notice
this as they zip by.

Bunch of squirrels live on the grounds of the state capitol here.
They were all so badly inbred as they were trapped in a little island
of green surrounded by concrete and blacktop. I believe it got
so bad they had bring in some 'fresh blood' to keep the population
viable.

Then there's all the poor nocturnal animals. Since people have such
poor night vision they've got to use these hideously bright headlights
at night. Can you imagine these animals, in the woods at night
(or on the road), suddenly being blinded by the headlights of an
approaching car? The deer in the headlight effect. Probably like
the start of a UFO abduction to them... then splat.

Well Its true if the Machine could create synthetic Borgs to run it it would. Hehe.

Fragmentation of habitat is a hugely overlooked problem. You are correct local species are going extinct just due to fragmentation of habitat. National connective Greenways would help but the machine and its Borg fight this tooth and nail when ever it is brought up. Its a commie socialist thing! Yet the commie and socialists despise it as well. twisted beyond description.
Like the Buffalo are anti American!
The Machine is a porto potty after a 3 day outdoor concert. Its Borg whats in the tank. Not much soul in that retchid flotsam.

One of my favorite exercises for an intro class.

Ask:
"How many of you are afraid of terrorism, and war, and such things?" Many will put up their hands.

Then ask "Anybody who lost someone in the 911 attack, please put up your hands." A few will put their hands up.

Then ask "Anybody who lost someone in a car wreck, put up your hand." Most will put their hands up.

Then as "If you have lost more than one, put up both hands."

The room will be a forest of arms.

Then say "What do we really need to be afraid of?"

Turns out, we humans are very bad at risk analysis as a matter of gut feeling. Real risks just get normalized, and we take them for granted. Less real risks speak to us loudly, and we waste our time worrying about those things.

Interesting. Very twisted. Its up to parents to start teaching their kids real life stuff. Dont u think?

Well anyway this weekend I was working on my rigs engine. I was reaching way down in the engine area and crushed my right side of my rib cage. it went THUMP! So It was ok but tight on my right side. So this morning I was trying to relive the tension and was pushing agaisnt the side of my rips and all a sudden it went. THUMP! and it seemd to go back into place but now I am more sore than before. Is this normal? I heard its normal after u thump something back into position.
I compressed the ribs form the front. So today I was pushing into the sides of my ribs (my right side) with a "push them forward" theory. POP!

Holy Tatanka! I love that beast! I have a painting of native Americans on paints in a hunting party using bows and arrows hunting them down. Its right in my face everymorning. The Salmon and Buffalo cultures were the purest cultures ever on earth. The seattles, the plains tribes and the NE tribes. They used the energy the great creator provided. The best proteins and nutrients ever. Pure and simple. What the Machine and the Borg produces is soylent green and can not even hold the jockstrap of nature.

Me too. Roadkill is an important part of our diet. Last year we picked up 3 deer, kept us in meat much of the year.

I fixed it. Just so everyone remembers, posting oversized pics is a violation of the COC. If you change the formating from img to web, the pic gets it's own scroll bars and the whole window doesn't get blown out of shape.

And two thumbs up for the recipe idea.

Sorry about that, I didn't know it would be so large on screen. How do you format as "web"? Do you just erase .img and replace it with .web?

well...when you're making a post, there's a little button with the internet explorer e right next to the image button. Or you can take the [ img ] in the post and replace it with [ web ]
