See Kunstler's suburbia get theirs! Complete with nutso neighborhood association cooridinator. This thing is funny but those of us PO aware will shrink in our seats at the overview of suburbia and the animal characters naive but accurate views in the undertones.First movie I've seen in six years in a real theater.Worth it!

I saw this movie with my kids recently and liked it, too. Actually, the only decent movies I've seen in the past five or 10 years have been kid's films, such as Shrek, Nemo, Incredibles, and this.
I thought it made a strong argument in favor of importance of community, and living simply and preparing for a possibly uncertain future. Made a strong argument against suburbia.

I liked the moment where this one guy explains what an SUV is. Like when he is asked - and how many people can sit in there - he answers - normally, just one. ;)

not to mention the song for the closing credits "Rocking the suburbs"

"Watching Mommy balance checks while daddy juggles credit cards"

A very fitting end note for it all
Angry yet?

This is a good movie, I'll agree. I feel it (or perhaps I...) was/am a bit conflicted, taking many subtle jabs at the artificial creation of suburbia while making it surreally perfect at the same time (as noted by the sprinkler synchro scene, ultra green lawns, lack of imperfections in houses/suburban landscape, etc.) Part of the film is almost envious of suburbia, but probably in a purely ironic way. It's almost as if half the viewers of this movie will leave with their notions of civilization unchallenged and, rather, reinforced, and the other half of us affirmed that the sprawl lifestyle is fatally flawed and doomed to oblivion.

end rant

Movie: Over the Hedge (Suburban Sprawl Commentary?)

Unread postby dbarberic » Wed 16 Aug 2006, 09:48:18

A new children’s movie trailer caught my eye. The movie is called “Over the Hedge” and it is a story of how animals living in the woods deal with suburban sprawl in a Midwest state after a development pops up during the winter as they were hibernating. I believe the movie is produced by the major studio, DreamWorks.

Although I have not personally viewed the movie, it made me wonder if the writers are trying to subtly present a commentary on our suburban lifestyle and what that commentary is.

Has anyone seen this movie and can they comment on it? If your interested in commentary on suburban sprawl and have children, you may want to check this movie out and report back to us what you think the message being presented is (if any).
