Meteroite impact in your future?

Unread postby Tanada » Sat 10 Jun 2006, 07:15:36

About 2 AM local time a meteorite impacted north of the arctic circle in Norway. Nobody knew it was coming and it impacted with an energy similar to a WW II atomic bomb.

If it had impacted New York or London would anyone have thought it was not a WMD attack?

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '"')This is simply exceptional. I cannot imagine that we have had such a powerful meteorite impact in Norway in modern times. If the meteorite was as large as it seems to have been, we can compare it to the Hiroshima bomb. Of course the meteorite is not radioactive, but in explosive force we may be able to compare it to the (atomic) bomb," Røed Ødegaard said.

yep just another in the long list of possible dooms.

If I had to pick one I think I'd go for one a bit more in-your-face. like a super-volcano, nuclear winter without the nukes!

Yes, you are probably right there - especially as there would have been a lot of death & destruction. Have there been any reports of casualties, or is the area SO remote that nobody lives there?

My husband has been watching a lot of meteorite programmes lately on the Discovery/Science Channels, etc. but that is one scenario I don't think I can handle right now. Let me plan for the things that I have some power over; unless I am a scientist I can do nothing against cosmic 'outsiders' popping in. Thanks for the scary news update!!

Well acording to this SOURCE the impact was on a mountain slope near the Finnish border, unless some poor soul was living or hiking there it is probable that no humans were hurt. Wildlife on the other hand was wiped out at the impact site and might take years to return, but only time will tell.

A large asteroid impact is perhaps an event that I fear the most, much more so then things like PO or GW. And I find it amazing that people generally aren’t concerned about them.

The fact is our planet is zipping through the solar system amid an unimaginably large mass of giant rocks chaotically zipping across our path. The fact is these rocks constantly smack into our planet, often causing incredible damage. And the fact is that statistically speaking, we are about due for a major impact event that will wipe out 99% of life on Earth, and certainly all human life. And this impact event *will* happen, guaranteed.

The really frustrating thing is that it is totally within our technological capabilities to avoid, which comes with the added bonus of true sustainability (living off extra-terrestrial resources), but we prefer to squander our capabilities on wars and hyper-consumption.
