Time to Raise the Price of Gas

Postby KingM » Thu 11 May 2006, 08:25:28

The problem with gas prices in America is not that they are too high, it's that they are too low. With taxes on gasoline so much lower in the United States over the past several decades, the result has been that American towns are more spread out than their European or Japanese counterparts, mass transport is underdeveloped outside of certain major cities, and we are more at risk to any supply disruptions or price spikes. Many Americans are simply not on any transportation lines and do not have the option of leaving the car parked when gas prices spike.

In short, we have built our entire civilization around the premise of cheap gasoline.

Most oil experts believe that gas prices are unlikely to come down as oil supplies will remain tight for years. Indeed, with peak oil on the horizon, there is a very real risk that $3.00 will come to represent the new floor for gas prices, and not the ceiling. If so, our task becomes all the more urgent. We must keep a lid on gasoline demand and build an infrastructure that will allow us to survive should petroleum continue to grow more expensive.

Actually you guys needed high fuel prices about 60 years ago, as did most of the western world. High fuel prices now will simply lead to some sort of.. rioting or discontent among the suburbia households. Since we are a very complex society now built upon cheap energy we need to sustain this or face the unknown consequences.

Of course we should have started 60 years ago, but there's no way we can keep going in this direction for decade after decade. Far better to deal with the short-term pain than to assure our own destruction.

I think about 95% of people who understand peak oil would agree that gas prices need to be higher.

The price of gas should be at least $5 a gallon. Put an end to this suburban hell that America has become. The speed limit should be dropped nationwide to 55 mph to save gas, and carpooling should be encouraged by all levels of government: city, state, and federal.

The problem with 55 and why its such a rub, is that it inconveniences no one in New England, and inconveniences everyone in Texas, Montana, etc. We drive faster down here because there are 200 miles of straight nothing between cities. If you want to share the pain equally, lets set the speed limit at 55 everywhere, but we take 200 billion from amtrak's New England budget, and we take that money and lay highspeed rail between Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, and Austin. (Everyone flies to El Paso, so don't worry about that.) Include the mandate that the train must run at least 5 passenger cars, every three hours, and must take no longer than 4hours on each trip. If the train fails to run, the speed limit cap comes off automatically. If the fair is ever higher than any New England fair NY<->DC or Boston<->DC, the speed limit caps come off automatically. Anything you can take with you in a passenger car, you are allowed to take with you on the train.

That would be a fair sharing of the pain.

I actually think my cost estimate is a bit low, but its high enough to evoke the appropriate feelings.

Yes, prices must go up! I'm for anything that stops this plague of giant vehicles cannoning along the crowded roads of Vegas.

Good site for finding local gas prices in Canada. was 113.9 for the past several weeks and is now up to 119.9 120.0. Is this a signal that summer driving is now here?

Holy crap Zardoz, you are paying Canadian prices down there! How do you manage?

No linky, just noticed the big spike today from $2.75. I'm sure it will drop again, but then climb back even higher. The tend has started. $2.95 is really high for gas here.

Remember, the oil companies are just gouging us. We have enough oil for 100years – no problem.

Hmn, 41p a litre $2.95 is. Halcyon days, around 1990 fuel was that price! Currently £1 a litre atm. Your cost of living is much cheaper than ours too, cheapest house where I live is $380,000 and our wages are lower.

$2.95? Passed that here 3 weeks ago. Costco edged back down to $2.99. Either way, the stuff is still cheap.

I filled up yesterday for $2.70. Last week I saw it in Jackson for $2.52. This morning I noticed it was up about a nickel. (That's $.05 for outlanders...)

Hi Zardoz...I take it this pic was taken in California somewhere?

I calculate that the DIESEL price (the lowest one in your pic) is $1.33 (Australian) per litre, at a time when diesel fuel is supposed to be $1.30 (Australian) per litre (It isn't, locally).

This marks a HUGE shift in the Oil Debate: this is the first time that anywhere in the contiguous United States has had higher fuel prices than Australia's official price.

It looks like 2005 was the Peak, guys. Hmmmm...can anyone say "desperation measures"?

Not that I think 3 dollar gas is a good thing for you yanks, but OH MY GOD gas is about 4.50 up here and our sky hasn't fallen yet.

Is there a different sky down there??

Seriously, if you yanks had to pay what we do for booze, smokes, and fuel your nation would have a mass coronary or be up in arms the next day.
