There are plenty of mean nasty gruff coarse assholes in this world. I swear I saw a post of somebody who said that their dad would ridicule any effort at realization by asserting brainwashing nonsense. I grew up an aware and sensitive child and my father didn't thwart me. But I suspect that antagonism to dad is a primary motivator for many.
