Did Ya Know?

Unread postby Aaron » Mon 29 May 2006, 10:40:02

Because of the nature of the subject material on this forum, and the advent of syndicated content on the web, our news & posts are viewed by many, many people around the world.

On any given day, you can look at the bottom of the main forum page, & see what appears to be a handful of members & a bunch of lurkers browsing the site.

But because of content syndication, a larger "transparent" population sees this information as well.

Like this example of our news content being republished http://www.newsmeal.com/modules/xhld10/index.php?id=28

There are similar examples for our extensive forum content.

This trend, combined with our massive & growing lurker population, means that the visibility of what gets published here, greatly exceeds apparent traffic, (which is about 1/4 million pages per day).

As I write this for example, here's a peek at the admin view:

Peak Oil...

The word spreads.
The problem is, of course, that not only is economics bankrupt, but it has always been nothing more than politics in disguise... economics is a form of brain damage.

This is encouraging news ;-) yet....

I wonder what percentage of these folks are in denial.
I wonder what percentage of these folks are JohnDenver types!!

It took me many months to overcome what initially appeared to be a "constant negativity" on your part Aaron.
I realize now that you, Monte and the others were only reflecting the reality of our very negative and very real situation.

Let us hope that the majority of these people (lurkers, watchers) can see this for what it is, join in the discussion and most of all move toward sustainability and powerdown....amen.

I would say most people think Peak oil and UFOs' are about the same level... And I think for still another 5 years, people will still blame Exxon, and will be suporting democracy in Iran as they fill their SUV.

Most suspect there is a problem, but will join the group think and group talk to delay and hopefully protect their wealth and push this off enough to let the next generation deal with it.

Peak oil isn't so difficult to understand, but it's scary. As long as everyone pretends that their is no problem and that it's Putin's fault or Iran's or Saddam because he did 9/11 (that was sarcasim), then everything will be fine.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Aaron', 'L')ike this example of our news content being republished http://www.newsmeal.com/modules/xhld10/index.php?id=28

Great in itself, but since when is this? Never knew. Btw, when clicking on the 'more' in every story there I get a "404 Not Found
The requested URL /modules/xhld10/15560@http://peakoil.com does not exist." message. Should tell those guys.
Title click thru works perfectly, though.

Fair enough... I can only hope to reach as many people as possible. If we work together we can have an impact on how things go.

It's the together part which makes me a skeptic.
Individually, I have known many fine, Noble people I am proud to associate with. But as species go, after hundreds of years as the top predator on the planet, we are a nightmare of selfish, deluded pretension.

Mankind is currently enjoying the richest, most prosperous time in our history... & still we fight. As scarcity drives costs ever higher, some will cooperate toward sustainablity... but more will simply fight.

Let's say i just submitted a news item and it was accepted and put on the main page.
How many of the hits are news lurker noise level, and how many are actual clicks by visitors of the PeakOil site?
How many visitors see the main page, but don't click any of the news items. They will still read the news item summaries. Just curious about the stats of this syndication stuff.
Excuse my ignorance, but what is a John Denver Type?

John Denver was one of the cornocopian anti doomer basically doesn't believe that peak oil is going to happen types. He was a bit more prolific than the rest is all. He wrote a blog called peakoildebunked for a while, but stopped recently. Not sure why, maybe he finally got bored. Although even though he said that's pretty much why he left, I still saw posts from him after. On this site I mean.

As for the rest, I for one wish people would keep there less relevent fantasys in the open discussion area. I really hope that people visiting our site can find things to relate to, because I honestly want to use this site as a place to inform people. I too as a general species don't have a huge amount of faith. But I have great faith in people.

Thank you all for clearing that up for me. I am aware of the website of Peak Oil Debunked, but I did not know that the writer, JD, is called John Denver. My initial connotation was the late John 'Country Roads' Denver. However, JD's contribution to the Peak Oil community was the avoid too much group think. His most recent post is about Kunstler predicting the end of the world, because of the Y2K problem.
