Haha. 10 years later and the price of oil has gone from 70 to 85 bucks/barrel. Cute.

Guess I'll search the BBC website. That would be a video I would buy.

2016 . . . no doubt because the pro-business-friendly government yes-men at the BBC, don't want you to think that present crop of politicians and industry execs, should be held to account for the mess. Or do anything about it.

It's a pity they over-dramatise the issue with talk of the oil "running out". Altough the text clarifies this to the Peak Oil scenario we know, it's the headline that will stick in the mind. People won't listen. The world has "run out of oil" many times, and always more was found because it was there to be found.

You just can't incite a sense of danger in people who have been living cossetted, spoiled lives in a consumer nursery playpen. They live in quiet suburbs, in safe houses, they drive big "safe" cars and they work in nice, bland offices, and most medical conditions can at least be treated. Only cancer is still really scary, and a few more esoteric things like MS. In the view of such people, almost all the traditional hazards of life can be avoided through prudence. Running out of oil? Water off a duck's back.

Most people do not understand energy. They have no technical education at all. How many in the general public have even heard of entropy? Or have any real idea of just how much energy a gallon of gas contains? You could walk for a thousand miles on the calorific content of a gallon of gas. They blithely tip a thousand gallons a year through the tanks of their SUVs. The British alone drive the equivalent distance per year of 5% of a light-year. The Americans must drive a light-year every three years. And these people don't even suspect that this kind of behaviour can cause an energy crisis on a planet of six billion people.....

Please don't insult yeast by even comparing that clever organism to humanity...

1/20 of a light year per year? Are you sure that's a light year? Becuase then that would mean that Britons were travelling 15000 km/s CONSTANTLY. I just don't see that happening. Maybe you mean a light second...or a minute, but definately not a year.

I will explain what I mean. In the UK the cumulative total distance driven by all motor traffic is about 500 billion kilometres per year. That is about 17,000 kms per vehicle per year, quite reasonable.

In a light-year there are 9,400 billion KMs.

So, rather roughly, the UK drives about 5% of a light-year per year. I took a guess that for the USA the total would be about sixe times greater, but in fact it is probably more than this.

You might be surprised how far several million people can travel in a year. Even British cyclists managed to cover a cumulative estimate of about 4 billion KM. This will be an under-estimate, but provides guidance.

Thanks, never thought about this light year scale.
It will be a great educational tool. I think that most of the people associate light speed travel with gazzilion energy output so it might help explain the concept of limited energy source here on earth..

Strange that the advertising for this programme should be minimal compared to the last series of If...?

When they did one about the Gas supply it got heavy advertising exposure.

Also why Start a series with the one IF that dictates every other one in the series.

I get the impression this will be a programme without definite conclusion as the consequences of oil running out are to far reaching for a 45 minute show.

You got that right. In 1994, we drove over half a light year. Since 1936, we have driven over 15 light years ( 88,084,272 million miles). In fact, by 1946, americans were already driving more miles than the UK is now.

In a sick sort of way, it makes me proud to see how good we are at being number 1 in consuming literally everything.

A bit too much "story" and too little "information". They didn't even make the point that now, for every barrel being discovered, 5 are being consumed.

And £1.33 per litre Petrol in 2016.........just a little bit optimistic!

Mostly useless - apart from screening occasional statistics which, if new to the viewer - would have helped give pause for thought.

However, encouraging to see that in 10 years time, the price of petrol (per litre) will only have gone up by 30p.

Avoid.
