Sorry to use the forum for "private purposes", but I ordered "Crossing the Rubicon" on amazon.de and now I need some help.
Since I don't know german, I made the order almost "blindly" and now I'm worried for the delivering etc.
Can any german member help me?

Thanks! Sorry everybody!

Really? I'll bet you get some great views of Jupiter!

On a more serious note to Barbara, have you tried Google's free translation services? I was able to open an email account in Germany (and, sadly, I don't speak a word of that fine language) using Google...

Jack's translation seems to be correct, they've just gave it to german post parcel-service (=DHL) yesterday. How long it will take until delivery for Italy, I don't know.

But I think not more than 4 or 5 days.

Looking for folks in GERMANY & VERMONT, near & longe

Postby Grace » Wed 03 Nov 2004, 23:25:36

Hi there, I have been a Peak Oil believer (that makes it sound like a cult, but whatever) since 2001, and am hoping to beat the rush to the hinterland and have my own quasi-homestead by about 2010 at the latest (which might be too late). I want to get in touch with people for two purposes:

1) My husband and I are likely to be living in BADEN WURTTEMBURG, GERMANY, next year (2005-06 academic year), probably in KONSTANZ. I won't have a work permit, but I would LOVE to get in touch with someone in that area who can teach me any of the following: draft horse work and technology, shearing, spinning, weaving, basic construction/woodworking, organic grain growing, cow dairying, seed saving, etc etc etc. I am a useful and experienced worker in small-to-medium scale organic gardens, I can milk a goat, collect eggs, build a compost pile, etc. but am looking to take it to the next level. If you are in Baden-Wurttemburg and have a small farm and could use my help next year, PLEASE send me a pm.

2) In the longer term, I know that I won't be able to run my homestead by myself. First i just don't have all the skills and all the time (I can't be farmer AND housewife), and second, I plan to acquire said homestead by being a priest in the Episcopal church and living in the rectory of a rural parish, so I would have to actually preach sermons and stuff too. (Yes, I am a Christian of progressive politics. We do exist. The Bible even hints that God might care about how we treat Creation.) If anyone who's handy, or likes cooking, washing dishes, doing the heavy work around the place, and generally pitching in, or wants to learn to do some of this stuff, wants to team up with us (me & my husband, who's into orchards, herbs & pigs), PLEASE, again, send me a pm.

Thanks, and I hope to meet some like-minded folks!

Hey, Grace! Me, too! :) Matter of fact, I just finished "progressively prosletyizing (sp?)" Guest over at the Bush...Rapture thread!

Godspeed on your mission to acquire both useful and barterable skills during your time in Germany! Me, I once killed a cactus by overwatering it, so I hope to learn to can stuff, so that people like you can grow it, and I can preserve it! A ministry in Vermont sounds good--Vermont's probably a great place to wait it all out, and rebuild from, Lord willing. ('Course, we may have ruined the ecosystem up there with pollution and global warming, but one obstacle at a time, I guess....)

Don't know if 2010 is too late for the preparing ones or not, as long as we are in prayerful preparation through it all, but it's sure not gonna look good for the rosy-tinted glasses ones. (You know, like our newly elected-- it IS his first win, you know!--President! ) My problem is that I'll probably be having to get a job soon (been living off my Dad's estate $), and that if, by some miracle, I DO get a job, it won't be doing anything of use post-crash, and that seems like SUCH a waste of time for something as about-to-be-worthless paper money. If you're a praying person, pray for people like me, in positions like this. We are all SO unsituated for what needs to be done in these times....

Just encouraging: remember, you and I aren't working on our own strength! Keep the faith; and help both of us when we're in unbelief! :)

Hi,

Demeter(www.demeter.de) is by far the largest cooperation of bio-farmers in Germany, they'll surely help you at finding an internship. Their contact-adress for Baden-Württemberg is

Forschungsring für Biologisch-Dynamische Wirtschaftsweise
Mrs. Edith Daniel

Tel. +49(0)6155/841240
auskunftsstelle@forschungsring.de

just ask her by email.

Will you do your studies in Konstanz? Could it also be another university or should it definetely be Konstanz? BTW: a beautiful city just near the Alps, and even Sitzerland & Austria are just on the other side of the lake, Bavaria and the Schwarzwald is also nearby.

BTW II: an internship at a mountain-farm in the Bavarian Alps could also be of interest to you, these farms are often not a member of an coop/organisation of bio-farming while working mostly without any larger mechanization. And in those small villages a lot of old-fashioned handcraft is still alive, mostly from the elderly who are afraid to take this knowledge to their graves when not passing it on. So they will surely be able to show you a lot when treated with interest and respect. Most of these people there also have a deep (catholic) faith.

I don't know how this will affect a working permit, but I think, helping at a farm for food and sleep without a payment should be OK.

Hmm, near Wuerzburg (Bavaria, with a large American community) I know a Christian cult/community called "Universelles Leben", who live mainly from doing a lot of bio-farming and traditionel handcraft, perhaps this is something for you, but I do NOT recommend this church, you have to find out yourself whether you can share their beliefs.

Their homepage is
http://www.universelles-leben.org/

Just a hint:In Germany Catholics can mostly be found in Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria and the Rhineland, while Protestans are mostly to be found in the other parts of the former West-Germany, the East is almost totally atheistic.

Churches like the Mormons, Amish etc. as mostly found in the US are not quite common, these are only small and smallest communities mostly found in larger cities.

Tell us here, how you proceed with your plans...

No problems, perhaps you can find a Goethe-Institut near your home-town

http://www.goethe.de/uk/enrindex.htm

Or you may hear Radio Deutsche Welle via Internet:
http://www.dw-world.de/dw/0,1595,265,00.html

maybe you may to see German news channel ww.n-tv.de
http://www.n-tv.de klick "Bild&News" on the top right corner, then "live"
or,of course, you read on this German board about peak oil
http://www.f27.parsimony.net/forum67590/ 8)

many news being posted here are also discussed there on german.

if you cannot find the meaning of certain words, this online-dictioniary is the best I know:

http://dict.leo.org

if you should have any further questions don't hesitate to send me a pm.

kind regards,
Mark
