BUYING LOCAL MAY SAVE YOUR LIFE

Unread postby grabby » Thu 25 May 2006, 08:54:44

Global biotechnology companies claim they have the answer to world hunger. But biotech production does nothing to solve local hunger problems. Does anyone believe that the invention of biotech plants whose seeds are sterile - forcing farmers to buy new seeds every year - has anything to do with stopping hunger? The biotech industry's goal is not to feed the hungry, only to feed itself."

A recent United Nations study confirms that the world already has enough food. They have too much food if they want to make Biodiesel! Correct? The problem is one of distribution.

Global trade rules put food production and distribution in the hands of agribusiness giants, supplanting the traditional system of local production for local consumption.

Agribusinesses are totally against this message:
(All employees of agribusinesses please cover your eyes, thank you)
BUY LOCAL SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL FARMERS
AT THE FARMERS MARKETS!

This message is MORE important than global oil
Why?
Because you CAN'T DO ANYTHING about global oil and it is coming like a train anyway. This you CAN do something about. This may save YOUR life.

We know peak oil is coming, we know there will be a time when shipping stops for a while. Or for a bit longer, whatever.

PRICES for Biofuels are bribing our farmers and even our AGRIBUSINESSES to give up food production with IMPOSSIBLE to achieve promise of replacing oil with Biofuels.

Agribusinesses are in it for the money, and biofuels will pay the MOST I promise, guess what our local farmers will go to also if they can't support themselves?

They think they are doing a good deed saving us from fuel starvation! But they cannot do it!

Any calculator will tell you this is impossible to even touch our fuel needs with bioANYTHING.

The message to TRY AND MAKE AS MUCH BIO as possible, as much wind as possible tas much solar as possible, max possible ethanol max poss biodiesel and CONSERVATION

THAT MESSAGE WILL TAKE OUR FARMERS AWAY.

THE POISON PILL IS THIS BAIT:
Give the farmers a MORE LUCRATIVE MARKET (after they destroyed the lucrative food market) and THEY WILL GO THERE. Because it makes them money. Nothing against making money, but we need farmers to make money on FOOD.
We should immediately tax all incoming food 100% but we won't. So therefore, Yes, thanks to SUPER chain markets and GLOBAL SHIPPING they cannot compete in food, so the last vestiges of farmers are EVEN NOW switching to biofuels. Where they can survive.

I promise you, soon you will starve, if all our local farmers grow non-edible crops.. Relying on majority of food from overseas is a giant trap. WHEN this gets disrupted we will then be sorry, but you cannot bring back the small local farms even now. They are our vanishing resources they cannot come back.

The most important PEAK OIL message is: Biofuels cannot save us, but it will take away your food.

This web site already has proved biofuels are not going to do ANYTHING about fuel needs of this country or the world. Not at all.
But we miss the point our farmers are being taken away from us NOW. As we speak. We have starved them with NAFTA into changing crops.

You don't see it till they are gone. Frequently as I contact them for more food, more and more tell me as I see them "We are going for the paying crops (ethanol biodiesel) rapeseed, sugar beats, corn, switchgrass etc." We won't be doing potatoes or corn or whatver...
THERE IS GOOD PAY THERE not here!

This globalization is the last step of a global economy, it will be what takes us down. We KNOW there will be a sudden wakeup with fuel shortages for a few weeks, Then there will be a famine such as you have never seen.

The world is producing the wrong kind of food, by a process that leaves millions of people landless, homeless, cashless, and unable to feed themselves.

Is it any wonder that there is huge resentment against the west?

The main problem is that globalization of food production pushes small, self reliant farmers off their lands and replaces them with large chemical and machine-intensive corporate farms. It does not emphasize food for hungry local communities. Instead, it encourages exports resulting in monocultures - a single crop grown over thousands of acres. These crops are usually luxury items cultivated for export and are notoriously vulnerable to insect blights and bad weather, and cause soil infertility.

"The globalization of agriculture fails to address the world's hunger crisis. In fact it makes it worse. During the past two decades, the total amount of food in the, world has increased, but so has hunger.

Don't believe it? this is what happened in this country, we are not far behind when our oil supplies SLOW DOWN. I did not say RUN OUT I said begins to slow down.

Agri businesses run on oil, when there is a shortage for even a few days whole fields will become worthless.

Here is the last and most important message I have for you, please listen so I don't tell you later I TOLD YOU SO.

Buy as much food as you can locally with simple currency to protect your farmer resource. These small farmers are your richest resources, most precious. Over the last year we have not bought any food from any store, just to see if it could be done, just salt and jars and bags and we have found we live quite fine. We don't have a lot stored anywhere just buy as we need it. This was just a test for us . It is not hard. Soon this will be your only way of gettting food.

Get names of people locally every time you find a source get their NAME and NUMBER and ADDRESS and promise them much more business so they can plan for next year. You may just save both your farmers life and yours. No, it is not NECESSARY to do this now, but now is the time to get practice.

thats all thank you.

The small farms in this area lost the ability to grow for themselves.

How did your grandfgather survive the winter? Like the ants.
You get it while it is cheap and plentiful and blanch freeze it or can it pressure canning. you can get canners that do 30 quarts at a time.
ours only does 7 at a time it is plenty. do 2 loads a day..

you can grow your garden(best)
20 zuchini plants (#1 producer) Butternut squash 10 plants, green peas (eat for fun)
corn Radishes eat for fun, cabbage, lettuce carrots (these stay in the ground and you go out and dig them p all winter) potatoes just for fun, pumpkins for pi and 130 tomatoe plants for sauce and stewed and fresh.
you can get boxes and bosex at u-pick places that is when you can them and freeze them freez and can the first of the season (NOW) that is the best flavor.

goto local miller buy white flour it is good for everything from pancakes to bread etc,

make own pasta (Machine on ebay) but handmade german noodles are best without a machine)

make nut milk (nuts keep) cashew and almond, california grows these. we gave up bananas and coconut, not local.

Apples you can get all year at farmers markets and potatoes too.
make french fries patties and mashed millions of ways to make them all. Basic really good food.

We have jars left of the best sqeezed apple juic, REAL GRAPE JUICE (oh our neighbors grow grapes and throw them out! they like them climbing on the fence we got a grape juic, a pot that boils for two hours and pure concored grape comes out (WOA way better than bought)
we have 50 quarts of the BEST FRESH APPLE JUICE you can not buy still and white grape juice. we were saving and we made mistake, should have been drinking it! now we will have even more!
got an old apple press in nikkle paper for 80 bucks, you can do 5 boxes(10 gallons in a few hours) cost us 5 dollars a box so 2.50 a gallon for the best apple juice you NEVER tasted :)

you may not get ALL your food this way the first year just some. try it, dont get discouraged by the second year you can do it and know you can.
easy.

if you live in apartment you go to farmers market and buy enough to freeze and can
canning siurvives power downs. freezing doesnt.
eat the freezer first and if the power goes out you can still can the frozen stuff if you have to what you need to do at work youll be home.

anyway,
its not that bad.

Look we froze 50 quarts of zuchini 25 quarts cucumber chips 50 bags of strawberris and rasberris and blueberries and 50 quarts of squash, for 4 people that is a good meal once a day, morning is cereals and evenings is soup got too fat.
must try to go to two meals a day.
and the staples are dried beans lentils peas wheat corn

homemade tortilla wheat and corn is great.

anyway winter is grains cereals corns apples and potatoes soups and chilli all the good winter stuff.

hew we still have some of everything left.
doesnt take that much.

just got one of those chest freezers that go sub zero that is enough for 4 people easy.

Make sure you eat all of it and repack each summer.

actually we never ate better food, I am now on a pilate program (pilates for dummies) to try and loose 10 pounds.:)

but you can get farmers markets in any city at this time for some fresh stuff

oh yes we grow lettuce indide in window boxes Head bib leaf simpsons several kinds we have lots of lettuce.

we grow raddishes in winter (does work somewhat) spinach. more than we could ever eat.

Oh yes walla walla sweet onions a whole Garden section of them, these can be frozen or canned (none of them made it to the freezer, we ate them all up last year before winter on tomaote sandwishes!(with lettuc and oat/filafel patty) that is why I gained ten pounds.

those who eat meat you know a freezer full will easily last 5 months.

its fun and we learned a lot.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('grabby', 'H')ow did your grandfgather survive the winter? Like the ants....
Edited for exessive text quoting. Azreal60

Good point thanks! Only we can save ourselves. no amount of "we have to get everybody to do this or that, or the government must have this policy or that" is going to.

That is hitting the nail on the head. If you wait until the whole ship changes course you will never make it.
Prepare now, exercise now, forego the vacations to hawaii, and go to Yosemite, redwoods, Grand canyon instead.
stay home live life with the family.

My chest twinges and pains have all disappeared I feel strong now much better than last year, good food will make you well it won't kill you.

the protein diet people think we are crazy, but you know what? we were designed to live on carbohydrate there is a LOT OF CALORIES in carbohydrates, a lot.
that is why people gain weight!
it stores readily!
This is good for all you ahve to do is eat less and you can be sustained a long time!
this is how we used to live, a small meal morning and evening and pancakes potatoes apples pumpkin pie like that, and everyone was SKINNY and HEALTHY!
OP.S. Beans red and garbanzoes have more protein pound for pound than steak

But if you like meat, just get a small meat freezer! you know you can store a whole cow that will last all winter.
it does not take as much food as you think.

happy getting healthy.

Yes if you wait for the rest , you will have nothing. they are not coming on this journey, its yourself now, take care of yourself and your family, be ready.

There is a really good thread on preserving food on this web site, excellent.
I just want to say if you freez your vegetables you cant just freeze them, you need what is called a double boiler with a pot on the obbot and a screen on the top (a blancher) i think, and farm store can get you one they are cheep, you cover it and let the steam hit if for 3-5 minutes and this kills the vegetable so it doesnt continue to grow and get woody in the freezer, and the flavor stays great! if you just freeze it straight it will taste like wood!

Oh wejust went and picke 65 pound of fresh asparagus FREE! This should give us (after feasting a week) have about 50 bags blanched an frozen how much does asparagus cost a pound frozen? Can you buy it? it is great for soups souffless or just heat and serve (the blanching almost cooks it)

Another cool thing is avocadoes. Try it. you can take a ripe one and put it whole into the freezer. When you unthaw it you have to eat it right away and you make guacamole with it or spread and it is just about like fresh, if you let it sit even 20 minutes it goes watery and you can eat it but the flavor suffers. so we had FREE avocados all winter with our tortillas.

lots of tricks you can do. Free food is always good and as you go around you will find MAY places where you can glean all you want.

Now I ask you, what is a better way to exercise? Buy a club mambership and go three times a week and push weights, or get out there and lift, pick, carry, squich, press, cook and can?
its FREE! And it is actually fun, we are doing useful things and the family for once is working together on a cool project.

other things I forgot to mention, frozen apricots , unfreeze mash mix with sugar make apricot toast (BEST)
Cherry juice!
canned cherries, shoeleather from all these fruits.
(favorites)
and POP!

yes pop! this is cool. get a 25 pound CO2 bottle and a regulator(80 bucks) tell them it is for a pop machine (get it at the welding shop)
ok now get a clear plastic water hose from the regulator to the stem (regular truck stem for truck tires) which is installed inside a lid of a 2 litter pop bottle.

pour ANY LIQUID juice or even water in there, set the pressure to 40 PSI and shake the bottle 30 seconds.
PERFECT POP whith much more fizz than regular pop.
make it for about 1 cents a liter.
its on the web go look it up some genius posted it and we just followed directions.

1. ice liquid works best (holds fizz better)
but cool works and warm sort of works.
2. Turn the tank OFF so you dont leak
25 pounds is good for 300 liters of pop.
the other day I made acacia pop from the acacia blossoms outside that was interesting and different. anyway it gives the kids a treat so we dont have to worry about them hankering for store things, they love to make it themselves and try different flavors. the neghborhood kids prefer our ppop, it has more fizz.

if someone wants to host it I can make a short video showing the apparatus and how we can make pop in 30 seconds. easy and fun.

it costs us 1-2 cents a liter, they sell them fo TWO DOLLARS! this is a money making scheme. never buy pop again.
(Course after peak we willl only be able to probably make 300 liters and we will be out, but it will be fun to have a little treat.
I bet we could sell it 5 bucks a glass for memories.

lots of things you learn its fun...good hunting.

P.S. We are not doing this to save money. it is a great hobby and a usefulll hobby, much better than stamp collecting. This one we KNOW we will use soon.

Here is my lunch today!
(I always can't wait to see what is in it)
Ok here we have in a GLAD and ZIPLOC plastic sdisposable storage container (we reuse them) they are real cheap and survive freezing very well Thank God for plastics :)
anyway,
Homemade Pasta with HOME COOKED Tomatoe sauce cooked from scratch from last years GIANT ITALLIAN PASTS HEIRLOOM TOMAOTES(these tomatoes are to die for)
and organic itallian sasonings.
One container of perfectly cooked asparagus (looks like enough to feed thre!! but I'll probably eat it all!(told you I was gaining weight)
15 fresh garden grown radishes (GIANT GLOBE) is best though some are really spicy (Heirloom) which I like too and some are soft and mild (i forget their name.

Sheesh I sound like a connosoiur now.)

OOOO look here HIOOME MADE CORN TORTILLA SHIPS cooked with CAL the real mexican way you cant buy them this good. A mexican lady came over and taught us to make them perfect! I think I will save that for dinner. and Mexican salad and bean dip to dip the chips into.

erfect peaches canned 6 halves!
Canned pickled zuchini slices... um must be a sandwich in here.

YES!a sandwich on thirsdays I get a sandwich

Homemade bread toasted with oat/fillafel patty (tastes EXACTLY like breaded veal!!!) and HOMEMADE KETCHUP cooked from scratch and canned, and MAyonnaise (I thinik cashew)

ah ha guacamole made with the frozen avocado.(tasting) Beautiful canned tell it was frozen.

ok 1 pint homemade tomatoe juice made from Erliana and Giant red mix tomatoes.

5 lettuce leafs from the windowsill garden aha and for dessert a bag of FROZEN GRAPES (now get some grapes (green) and freeze them then let them thaw until they are just a little crispy.
theat is the best thing you could eat, I would take that over icecrea, (though the icecream I get is good too)

anyway that is all

See why Im gaining weight?

I think I will have the sandwich and ships save the spaghetti for tonight.

see ya!
