$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('oowolf', 'a')nother Titanic metaphor from yesterday's Boston Globe:
another lame Titanic joke: The hold of the Titanic had in it major product shipments for Mexico, specially the English Mayonaisse for which there was a strong market in Mexico. The sinking caused a wave of grief in Mexico and so they created a new holiday for the lose of the mayonnaise: sinko de mayo.

I had an idea for a metaphor for the current system which I wrote into the post on "are we a death cult". this could be useful as very flexible. Maybe someone could expand on it.

Essentially we have created a body where oil is the blood, electricity is the nervous system, The financial markets/money, stocks, etc. is the air we breathe. This Frankenstein Monster unfortunately has cancer which is spreading to all the organs(runaway capitalistic growth paradigm). The heart will stop pumping blood(oil/gas/coal-peak oil theory) very soon and then there will be no more nervous system(electrical system - see olduvai gorge theory) signals working after that of course due to lack of energy. Perhaps of course the lungs will give out first(economic collaps due to mismanagement-overdebted, etc) and the monster will die of Pneumonia with blood still left in its veins. Unfortunately the monster is a fat bastard having eaten up all the fish in his pond, destroyed the soil on his farm, poisoned the air in his house making the atmosphere unbearably hot by his sweating and breathing and farting(Global warming) so that he could die of suffocation or overheating first.

I like "house of straw," as they used in The Road Warrior.
It sounds even less stable than a house of cards.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('galacticsurfer', 'E')ssentially we have created a body where oil is the blood, electricity is the nervous system, The financial markets/money, stocks, etc. is the air we breathe. You're describing what Lewis Mumford calls the "technological megamachine." In fact he has a two volume series that covers about 1000 pages describing it in great detail.

I highly reccomend, Pentagon of Power: The Myth of the machine volume II (link)

Lewis Mumford was kind of like James Howard Kunstler on steroids. His literary career spanned decades and he has a huge volume of important works.

The myth of the machine volume II is his greatest work IMO, and I refer to it all the time. A crucial read if you're to understand the nature of the megamachine and much of the thrust of history that has railroaded us in to the disaster we are heading for. Among other things, he predicts a 9/11 style attack based on the design flaws of megamachine, and the book was written in 1974.

Cool and I thought I had had an original thought- I guess all geniuses think alike(haha).

Unfortunately I only got the idea while thinking much more seriously and deeply yesterday morning of my father-in-law who is now dying of cancer in the last stages. This shit is brutal.

Maybe I will get the book. Thanks for the reference.

I vote for the Fall of Rome and its not in the poll.
The individual has always had to struggle to keep from being overwhelmed by the tribe. If you try it, you will be lonely often, and sometimes frightened. But no price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself.

Sure, The Fall Of Rome is a good one, as is yeast in a vat of grape juice or bacteria in a petri dish. I just didn't think of them at the time or I would have included them too.

The most bone chilling thing to me is how yeast die in their own waste once they have filled up the petri dish. Think about what will happen in a large metropolis when the sanitation system goes down. 8O

Better stock up on incense. Also, you may have to stay indoors for a long time, at least during the day - flies everywhere, the sky will be dark with them and they will carry disease. This assumes a fast crash scenario. If you can't bug out, you may want to plan for staying indoors while people are thinning out. Wouldn't hurt to have ladders and fire-extinguishers handy.
