Oil was the force that raised the civilizatons in the industrial revolution.
There will be no more next time, the oil is gone now.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'I')f the rich nations are made so by oil, but still 80 percent of the world population lives in dispicable poverty, there is no hope for continued technological advance of human society.

I don't understand this statement. As it stands today, there is, and has been a lot of technological advancement, along with widescale "despicable global poverty".

Given the future decline in FF resources we will have to switch to other, cheaper, more abundant forms of energy such as fission and biofuel. This will also entail a switch to more efficient mechanisms, and a dead-end to the service aspect of energy production. Those who control these services now are trying to get as much cash as possible so they can control other services after theirs has become much less profitable.
Essentially, the rich know that in a few decades the world will be faced with just how cheap energy has become, so they need to procure as many services as they can now to insure they're still rich after the transition.

Of course, but coal is just as much as a fossil fuel as oil.

Oil and gas seem to be really necessary to our modern way of life though...

People are a bit too focused on oil on the boards... that's all..

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('ElijahJones', '.')..the soul of America has died. People are sleep walking into a nameless future. Wake up! So some dipshit came over and smacked us upside the head. Stand up! All freedoms ever obtained by humans have been tenaciously fought for and preserved by diligence. Where is our diligence?...

...Do not allow yourselves you Great Nation to be so easily pacified by colliseums and intoxication as the ancient Romans. These same sold their Republic for free tickets to Super Bowl Zero. Do not allow your hearts to be blinded by luxury and fear...

Prove yourselves animals and as animals you will end your days. Prove yourselves willing to be human and find grace.

We could go either way.

At times I think that we'll somehow resurrect our dead "American soul" when the chips are down, but then I'll remember how sophisticated and effective modern mass opinion-forming mechanisms have become, and how materialistic, coarse, and shallow our entire culture is now, and it makes me think we'll never again be the people we used to be.

I don't know what it will take to turn us around. I don't see anything that could raise us out of this pit we've so willingly dug for ourselves.
