There is an old folktale, or a fairy tale story called Stone Soup. And I think peak oil is giving us the same...
This homeless man goes into a town and knocked on doors begging for food, and he failed, people told him, we are starving too.
So he finally tells someone that he can make soup from stones. Everyone in town joins in, as he makes this soup. Then he advises adding a bunch of veggies and spices to make it taste better. Next he says it will be much better if we add some meat as well. He had his meal, everyone was happy, they all learned to make stone soup, and he went on to the next town...
Corn based ethanol is stone soup.
Printing more dollars to help alleviate oil prices is stone soup.
The hydrogen economy is stone soup.
High technology for finding or extracting more oil is stone soup.
Tar sand is stone soup.
$100 gifts from Wash DC, is stone soup.
While the world is busy digging for good news in regards to high oil prices, we have these innovative guys taking money and feeding us stone soup. There is a hysteresis in our society because people can't deal with reality, this will make things very messy. Peak oil is not good, humans keep looking for the silver lining in this cloud... By the time the town folks realized they have been hoodwinked, the stone soup 'engineer' was gone... And by the time peak oil reality propagates across mankind, oil will be worth more than gold.
