Did you ever figure it all out? We've been a music and movies saturated bunch. The young ones are bound to feel hatred to us because we went along with the flow and didn't question the unsustainable life. I brought this up with my kids. They tell me that they'll cover for me. Will yours?

It never dawned on any of us. We just lived, that's all. We were the product of our times, as anyone living then would've been.

(There was a lengthy discussion of this in another thread, but I'll never find it. Anybody know which thread it was?)

I "got it" ca. 1970-73. One hippie who dropped out and stayed dropped out. Don't blame it on me. Those concerned with sustainable lifestyles have always been on the fringe. We will survive-whiny, angry zombies will die in a state of reactive psychosis.

I may die, but I'll be damned if it's in a state of "reactive psychosis". I will die with dignity. I will die scavenging the freewaysides for edible plants. I will die throwing rocks at birds. I will die rallying my kids to try and live. I will die eating worms and grubs and roots. I will die scrounging water from the roots of Eucalyptus trees. I will die trying against all odds to grow potatos. I will die trying to form cooperative efforts with the people who live nearby who are in "reactive psychosis" to do something that will work. I will die fighting the evil bastards who want to eat me and my family. I will die trying to live.

I work with more than a few boomers. At lunch the other day, we were talking about the deteriorating economy and my upcoming trip to Europe came up. They were puzzled as to why I would spend so much time and money on a trip knowing what I know - and, basically, I told them that I didn't expect to have a leisurely retirement complete with trips abroad, vacation homes, SS entitlements and huge 401ks, so I'm experiencing the world NOW while I can still afford it (relatively speaking). Then they said something kind of shocking to me...

They said something to the effect of "our generation (the boomer one) is getting more screwed than yours". Me, being a mere 24 years old, being told this by two 40-somethings. I was shocked. Basically, their reasoning was that they HAD expected social security to stay, along with an infinite-growth economy. It's what "they were promised." Apparently, my generation doesn't expect it and, as such, we're better off for it. While that's obviously true, I still have SS and Medicare taken right out of my check, for all its futility, like it or not. I think my generation is far more screwed than the boomers, for they have had ample opportunity to build wealth over their 20-30 year careers, and my generation simply won't get the chance. If the 1970s oil shocks and the S&L bailout didn't raise a few eyebrows in the direction of sustainability, then the older generations can't possibly be given a pass for their ignorance and/or unwillingness to change things.

Just ranting. :)

If they're younger than 42, they aren't Baby Boomers:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baby_boomer

They're probably "shadow boomers".

Take it from a genuine boomer, they may be right about being screwed, but they are absolutely dead wrong about you. You and others your age are being screwed, shafted, swindled, taken, robbed, and betrayed, and far worse than them.

I wish I could find that Boomer thread, because we discussed this at length, but the gist of it is that white, male American Baby Boomers with good educations (mine was provided virtually free of charge by the State of California) are unquestionably the single luckiest demographic group in the history of the human race.

Everything was handed to us on a platter. We had it so good we could even recognize it at the time, when we were young. We knew we had it made. We coined the expression "Is this a great country, or what?"

All who come after us will have it worse than we did. You may have a few electronic toys that we didn't have, but that's about all you have over us. We had confidence, serenity, security, and unshakeable faith in the future. We knew our lives were going to get nothing but better. I'm sure you would gladly trade that for your Internet connection.

Like I've done so many times before, I apologize for all the resources we squandered. We had no idea what we were doing. We blissfully set the stage for your Peak Oil scenario, and you get to live it out. I'll get a glimpse of the first part of it, but you'll be a participant in the whole show.

I don't envy you, and none of my peers that I know envy you either. You are the first generation of Americans whose lives will be worse than the one that preceded you. I'm sure you are less than thrilled to be awarded that dubious distinction.

Actually, weren't Baby Boomers born between 1946 and 1964, making them between 42 and 60 years old in 2006? This particular group that I'm talking about is in their mid-to-late 40s.

Everything else you said rings true, though. Unfortunately.

Brain fade typo. (Probably early onset of Alzheimer's.) Note the correction.

Yes, it is unfortunate. Matt Savinar said he feels like he's showing up at a really incredible dinner party, but right at the end when all the good booze and food have been snarfed up by those who showed up early.

Sure, no party lasts forever, but this one could have gone on for a lot longer if the early party-goers had not gone quite so nuts.

I get the same feeling. If car-based sprawl wasn't as incessant as it had become in the last 50 years in the U.S., I feel that would have bought us 20-30 years on the peak, perhaps delivering us to the holy grail of cold fusion. Basically, there's no telling how many technological and physical breakthroughs we have traded for a few decades of easy motoring, green lawns and three cars and a boat. I'm pretty sure it wasn't worth it.

You got it man. Initially for the longest time I used to think when everything fell to shit I'd just commit suicide and get it over with instead of suffering.

To hell with that, though. Thats what many of the people who are in "reactive psychosis" will do. Have you thought about what a shock its gonna be to people who don't know whats comming. Wow! I think many people are literally gonna loose their minds.

I've gotten over the depression stage and come to acceptance of the situation. I'm going to experience everything life has to offer me. The good and the bad. Besides I'm kinda curious to see how its gonna turn out. Thats enough of a reason to keep going.

So, I'm going down fighting too if I'm going down. I have no illusions that I'm gonna survive the situation, though. My best guess is that many Americans will starve to death when the grocery store goes empty and stays empty for extended periods of time.

I'll head out into the wild to look for food if I have to even if I die out there. Better to die out there looking for a way to live then to be one of the ones to roll over and die in the suburbs or city, huh?

I had a professor that told a group of us that we would be worse off (not all of us!) then our parents were. This was 1997ish. I didn't think too much of it @ the time. Now i know what he was talking about.

Emerson~where are you going in Europe? I should really get my act together and go there too. I could afford to do it even with the horrible exchange rate. Watch out for those Hostels in Slovakia

Looking back through rose colored glasses perhaps? Maybe you have a biased perspective?

I seem to recall many stories about living in constant fear of nuclear war. Stories about how the future was uncertain, of people’s fears of commies destroying our way of life, of government corruption, of the decaying of the moral fabric of society, of increasing hardships etc.

And yet hear we are, we survived. The future has always been something that has concerned society – even the boomer generation.

Not a chance. From my perspective, we are currently living in the greatest period of human history. Yes we will face some difficult issues, but I believe that we are also going to see a transition to a better world.

To use the tired party metaphor; the party is almost over, which scares the hell out of the people that partied all night. But soon the sun will rise on crisp new day, which fills with excitement the people who see more to life then gluttonous partying.

Hell on Hiatus best describes the world now. You know it's bad when Scientists call for the culling of 90% of the population of the world. As if their fellowman is nothing more than cattle. I generally can't stand people and couldn't with a straight face propose that.

We knew it wasn't going to happen, because we knew the policy of Mutually Assured Destruction was horribly logical. We were right, weren't we?

I've lived in both. This is not better. I could list dozens of reasons.

I have to ask: What will the population of the world be on that crisp new day?
