I agree, life without Afro-American culture would be very boring.

Paradoxically, the white Anglosaxon protestants' hatred and tyranny against the blacks has given a great freedom to those people. They've used their artistic creativity to set themselves free. And the result is magnificent. It's the best thing to come out of the entire USA's history.

The footage is from 1958. That's when the civil rights movement had just started in the US. Two images: great black jazz musicians creating a historic piece of music, while outside, in the street, blacks have to fight for their rights against the white Anglosaxon protestant. It's a stark contrast. But very revealing. And it makes the music even better.

It's this paradox which makes America so special. Despite the tyranny, the inequality and the racism, blacks, native americans and latinos still succeed in creating spaces of freedom.

It's a long way from Coltrane to NWA. Jazz is Dead, Long Live Jazz!

Great clip!
Both "Kind of Blue" and "Giant Steps" were recorded in 1959.
I hate to believe that music as an art form peaked long before I was born, but I struggle to find evidence to the contrary. To my ears at least, hip hop ain't the new jazz. :(

Awesome.

I have this music recorded but I've never seen this video. Thank You.

I have to watch it again.
The individual has always had to struggle to keep from being overwhelmed by the tribe. If you try it, you will be lonely often, and sometimes frightened. But no price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself.

KillJoy, don't give up on America yet. There's a revolution underway, the neo-cons have had their day, and their power and influence is waning. Just look at how many Americans now know that we are way way off track. Better times may be ahead (they may be harder for sure, but a more sustainable America may be on the way).

I like hearing optimism. But you know what they say about pessimists: in the long run they're always right.

By "white Anglo-saxon protestant," you are referring to English people, and the descendents of our ancestors in the USA? I can assure you that the Church of England is in no way racist, and that hatred of black people is considered bizarre and extremely archaic in the UK.

I assume you've sent your sons off with weaponry to engage the neocons right?

RIGHT?

A revolution in America will never happen. The neocons will never lose power, simply because at the highest levels of government, both parties are identical.

Vote in a Democrat, all you do is play into their game. It's just a giant revolving door. Different faces, same policies.

A peaceful revolution... as far as the old argument of they're all the same. Sorry, I don't buy it.

Your failure to accept reality does not change the facts. Both Democrats and Republicans have been gutted the Constitution equally. Both parties have instigated wars that were unconstitutional. Both parties pander to big business. FFS, the reason we are so ready to use military force in the Mideast stems from a paper called the Carter Doctrine and he's supposedly one of the people we should be listening to. When it comes to US interests, both parties have the same motive and modus operandi. All that changes is how the shit is shoveled into your mouth. Just because someone is eloquent doesn't make their shit smell like roses.

A peaceful revolution is laughable. In all of history, there have been maybe 3 or 4 successful peaceful revolutions. Revolution means blood and lots of it.
