$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Ludi', 'W')hy do people wish for a world without humans and then feel the need to tell other humans about this wish?

I love humans, individually, and care about them as a species as much as I care about all other species. I don't get along with people very well and tend to be a hermit, but I don't wish for everyone to go away just because I don't get along with them.

I wish for a world in which humans can live in a way that's better for them and other species. The current dominant culture isn't very good for people (too stressful) and extremely bad for many other species.

In this case Ludi I agree with you 100%. Well said!

Of course we don't nessecerily agree on how to acheive these goals, but what fun would the world be if we all thought exactly alike? The abillity to see a problem from multiple viewpoints and explore all our options rationally is what makes Humans a unique, so far as we can tell, species.
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Alfred Tennyson', 'W')e are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are;
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.

I was hoping the human genome project might be able to identify and isolate the gene which allows humans to become so self-destructively stupid, selfish and greedy. And maybe remove it once and for all.

Come on - let's do the world a favour.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('CarlinsDarlin', 'N')ope, I'd rather not get rid of all the humans, just the greedy, stupid "users" - those who consume endlessly without ever giving anything back, thinking all the while that they somehow deserve everything they're taking.

Being selfish and greedy has been pro-survival for a long time. I really doubt that eliminating it would solve our problems, it may cause worse ones.

'Selfish' I'll grant you. 'Greedy' is actually anti-survival, because taking more than you need leads to the threat of species destruction and the collapse of bio-diversity across the board - which inevitably impinges on us. Also, a lot of other flora and fauna seem to get by perfectly well within complex symbiotic relationships. I'd say our aces up the sleeve have always been; 'ingenuity', 'resourcefulness' and 'adaptability'.

Unfortunately, too many wrong choices can lead you to paint yourself into a corner. Hello, Peak Oil.

I'm with ya on this one! :-D

There are two things that need to happen in my book: A reduction of the world's population to one billion or so, and to find a way to change our nature so that we never choke on our excesses again (i.e., eliminate unnecessary want and greed.) Hopefully Peak Oil will be one of the things that will help us accomplish these goals.

Unfortunately, genes aren't that forsighted.

Greed maximises resources for the individual, therefore maximising individual survival and survival of that individual's offspring. Its up the the balancing forces of nature (disease, competition, predation...) to keep a population growing to excessive numbers and humans have been 'clever' (or lucky) enough to escape those pressures.... for now.
Kind regards, Katkinkate

Great thread. Please share here any dreams you have had about peak oil or global warming. Dreams are not random and have meaning as per Freud. Here is a book he wrote:

I assume you are human?

Well then, if thats what you really want, why not set a good example to us all and...remove yourself first.

addendum.
Doh! should have read the whole thread first... pipped. Its the obvious question though.

There is beauty in uninhabited space, the loss of biodiversity is possibly not a loss but nothing other than a transition. Here a sample of a human being in a remarkable spot there in the Sahara Desert. As much damage humans cause (throwing the existing system out of equilibrium) it at the same time should not be forgotten that we were born from within. If you look at this picture closely for a while you see where there was water and where there was not:

Hi,

I've had some recent dreams about PO. Or rather, I think they were somehow triggered by my discovery of PO and somehow, I seem to have always had these dreams but didn't know what they meant...

In the recent series of dreams, I am either driving a car or guided by some form of technology to the top of an escarpment, and then the terrain gets too difficult - down the other side - and I am forced to either abandon the car, or the journey itself.

In the earlier dreams from my childhood there is always a sudden cliff that I can't descend (having reached the top, from the easy side) & often then some big wave that then washes the cliff away in front of me.

Recently the cliff dreams, as I said, have changed into an escarpment - and I can now see down the other side - it's a precapice at first - the way down is still un-reachable but I can now see it (the bottom) now.

Last dream I saw (for the first time) a verdant land at the bottom of the escarpment - still no easy way down - but it might now be do-able.

Now this may be nothing to do with Peak Oil, but there again it might. Any-one else had similar?

Kinda funny, I'm in the same boat. Ever since I was a kid I always wanted there to be no humans (except maybe me and 5 other people). If I ever had a button to kill everyone I'd press it without hesitation.

I'm not quite sure what mental problem we would be diagnosed with, but I feel normal.

I've had dreams of walking through my city. It was devoid of life. Depending on the dream sometimes it is overgrown with vegetation other time it look as it is now. But It is always abandoned with everything left in place except for cars. No people or cars in the drive ways.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('MD', 'T')his thread includes those who wish for human extinction and those who wish for the extinction of those with opposing world views.

I want no part of either vision.

I want there to be a lot less humans on this planet. I've always hated crowds. We have way too many.

I just don't want to be one of the ones who has to go.
