OK WHAT CAN WE DO?

SOMETHING!

Try to go to your local farmers market or small grocer who usually supports local growers, this is usually better food and fresher and supports local agriculture. Get used to basic foods, its very easy to learn to cook.

when you buy a car, just buy the lowest horsepower car you can.
Honda civic 4 cylender is a good compromise.

that is all a hybrid is, a low powered gasoline engine, the battery is just helps the starts and stops if your in town.

Volkswagen diesel GEo Suzuki shift, small commuter cars are great.

I would not get a motorcycle, they are too dangerous and you'll get hurt, get a small car and be safe.

Buy a bicycle and use it, while you are driving around you dont have time for shopping. And it is fun, we have been starting this activity.

Go shopping once a week max and if you run out just wait till next week. New concept I know.

Drive slower

Fuel use on the freeway is all air resistance and tire resistance.

if we made national speed limit 55 MPH we would save more gas than all the proposed biofuels could ever make.

Turn lights out if you dont need them.

Wear a helmet, if you ride your bike.

These things will in no way prevent peak oil nor even delay it.

It is just good to learn how to live light.

DRINK WATER! You know this makes sense, adults need more water, milk is the highest wieght-gain food in existance, that is why babies drink it.

I was thinking of picking up a neighbor's old Porsche 914 and doing that electric conversion that the Toecutter is always talking about. I only really have to drive 8 miles twice a week on surface streets so it works for me. Part of my pre PO personal powerdown (or should I call it "Voluntary semiSimplicity"?) was to configure things so that I can spend as little time behind the wheel and as much time outside under the trees as possible.

What ever happened to the Toecutter? I_Like_Plants still around?

Sweet, that is one nice handling car.
Very light with great handling)

without engine and tranny you would be looking very light and NO FUEL COSTS? that is nice.

and soon they will be cheapest insurance anything over 35 years old needs nno mileage or insurance just a flat 50 dollar rate per month.

but yes that is one LIGHT car and looks cool with a new L-97 blue metallic paint color.

Good Idea.

Good luck finding a 914 without rocker panel or roof pillar rust (unless you live in the SW US or similar). I looked hard for one in the late 80's and early 90's without finding one in decent shape. Great car if you find it though. Lots of cheap VW parts and the targa top stows in the front trunk.

I am waiting for the day when at home depo there will be a small 1 person pickup/car that runs on those battery packs that recharge.
if they can go 100 miles I would buy that.

this is doable.
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('some news article', '
')May 2, 2006 - State Representative Todd Rutherford has found a way to fight higher gas prices.
The Columbia Democrat uses his new golf cart to go from his home to the State House, as well as his downtown office and courthouses. Rutherford says he bought the electric vehicle last fall when Hurricane Katrina sent gas prices to around $3 a gallon.

Rutherford says he spent an impatient winter waiting for the weather to get warm so he could drive the cart again.

The cart has a stereo and 15-inch flat screen TV, which Rutherford promises he watches only when it's parked.

State law allows residents to drive a golf cart on secondary roads within two miles of their home or office during daylight hours, as long as they obtain a $5 permit and insurance

might look at a golf cart, you can get them smaller and narrower to make parking even easier. put a few solar panels on the roof.
This will keep it charged for you if all you do is drive 8 miles a week.

just a place for cars...example

Please stockpile non-perishable goods, ammo & medicine.

I can't stress this enough...

It will be critical to the success of my Reaper Hoards as they roam through your various suburbs, burning & pillaging.

No camping stuff or agriculture junk please... can't use em.

You're in luck, there is a place that has a kit to convert the 914 to electric. Heck, go older 911, you can often find them minus engine for cheap- Porsche engines cost a fortune, and a tired 911 without it isn't worth a ton.

Would a golfcart be safe to drive around?
Probably an electric conversion would be better.

(the one in the left).

1.4L 16 valve engine.
Awesome mileage, and I can still blow away almost anyone on the highway.

Why not look to converting an existing diesel engine car into a vegetable oil car, would be much more pratical than messing around with batteries and trying to charge it up.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('grabby', '
')I would not get a motorcycle, they are too dangerous and you'll get hurt, get a small car and be safe.

On the other hand, a motorcycle is more fun and even at greater speed you will have a better fuel economy than with a car.

A diesel bike (which also can use homemade plain vegetable oil) can get 1000 km out of ONE tank! There is nothing like it.

More fun with less fuel - is there a better way to counter PO?

The only exception is if you have to move around in harsh climate, i.e. ice and snow, or transport stuff or more people...

Get a good offroad bike, some metal studs in the tyres for traction on snow & ice. Chicks love a guy on a bike, so don't worry about transporting others, they'll probably volunteer. If you get hurt, they can take care of you while you're laid-up in bed. You won't be much of a chick magnet driving a golf cart will you? Stuff? Have to learn from Asian villagers. They been piling stuff on bikes higher and wider for years. They steal our software, time to steal their intellectual property about loading up bikes with cardboard and stuff.
The organized state is a wonderful invention whereby everyone can live at someone else's expense.

Not with all of those batteries in it.

Anyway I want to do this too. Try to find an old VW Rabbit.

I was thinking of ponying up for the Li ion batteries. I figure I'd save on the weight and speed of recharge issue. Since I hardly ever have to drive anywhere more than three miles away I'd like to be able to charge the thing off a PV array on my house or garage.

I've gotten things down to the point where I barely put 50 miles a week on the cars and that number will be shrinking even more soon.

The old 911s from the late 60s to early 70s are nice-looking cars. I could get a 912 without the engine for about 3500. Its all nicely restored and everything..just waiting for a powerplant-but I'm not sure about the issues of cramming a motor and battery packs in there. I've seen kits for VWs and 914s in Home Power magazine.
