The US gulf coast (merged)

Unread postby warmh2o » Mon 01 May 2006, 11:41:54

I just ran across an article about a new oil field in the gulf. I haven't had time to look into this, so I'm not making any claims about its accuracy. Here's a bit of the article:

Scientists from the University of Cornell have discovered a massive amount of Oil off the coast of Louisiana. The find is some 60 billion barrels or 3 Times more than current US recoverable Oil of 20 Billion barrels, and would bring US total reserves to 80 billion barrels which is on par with Venezuela. In comparison to other finds around the world, this is twice the size of all Oil ever found in the North Sea and 6 times larger than the estimates of the Alaskan ANWR oil deposits.

What do ya'll think?

Why would anyone consider this a surprise? A single Ghawar discovered nearly anywhere on the planet throws the entire Peak oil debate for this decade and the next right into the toilet.

Considering the unexplored areas around the globe, let alone better finding techniques right here at home, not only isn't this a surprise but it is to be expected.

Of course, given your obvious agenda (your name isn't exactly subtle), I'm not surprised that you'd look at that article with rose colored glasses.

Me, I see a lousy, crappy website, complete with misspellings, "National Enquirer" type article headings "Library Built from Recycled Jets!" and errors (University of Cornell? What's that? You mean Cornell University?)

I know I'm being pedantic, but unless that story can be verified by a legitimate or even semi-legitimate news source, I won't hold my breath.

I'd love for it to be true, though, I'm not some doomer nut hoping and praying for the apocolypse.

This is old "news". Raining hydrocarbons in the Gulf

It sounds vaguely like abiotic oil to me, and so far nobody's drilling it, even though the above article is three years old.

Anyway, why do we need more hurricane targets?

Even if this were true, the alleged field appears to be located in Hurricaine central. Also, If you look at the oil rig maps, arent there rigs already all over the place in that area?

Any real validity here in terms of accurate reserve estimates or feasibility of extraction would have already been on every media outlet and on every politicians lips.

We are desparate for solutions and the illusion of solutions sometimes make a good substitute for reality.

If this were "real" then Mr Bush and Co would be dancing a jig on the media.

They aren't as far as I know, so it's not a real possibility.

Would have been nice 'tho ...

20 miles off the coast of Louisiana is considered unexplored?

MacG, cut that down to 8 months. The 60 bln is for total reserves. Take off 2/3 which gets stuck at the bottom and we're good for maybe a year...if this is real.

You mean oil isn't found under "salt dooms"?

All I have to say is Bull@#$. Since when is 20miles of the coast unexplored area? As I see it, oil has been discovered all around this area, and all of a sudden we have found 60billion barrels, give me a @#$!@# break... I was born, but not yesterday. Like everyone has already posted, if this were true the media and the politicians would be all over this to get the US citizens off their backs. I hoped this was true, but yet again we have an example of a BS story to keep our hopes up. To be quiet honest, this is getting old... [smilie=BangHead.gif]

This looks like a little scam to get people to click-through to a dumb site hocking tech gadgets and bric-a-brack digital cameras, laptops, etc.

So far it looks like it's working... 8)

Try Googling it and no results at all.

As far as a scam to generate ad revenue - it's brilliant. What a great (evil) idea.

[quote="pstarr"]So what if a Ghawar-sized field exists. Problem with your happy-faced, dumb-luck technotopianism is that it hasn't been found yet. quote]

But what is funny about probabilities is, just because it hasn't been found, doesn't discount the idea that it CAN be found. Simply sticking ones head in the sand and pretending that unexplored areas of the planet of COURSE can't have world class sedimentary basins in them is ridiculous and a key component to why Peak Oil probably isn't yet, and may not be for quite some time.
