You know, I was starting to get worried

WARNING! THE FOLLOWING POST CONTAINS SIGNIFICANT LEVELS OF DOOMEROSITY

I was coming home from the hardware store today, when I noticed something...odd.

There were two...let's call them "rotund" individuals, in (I'm guessing) their late 20's waiting for a bus.

THEY WERE BOTH ON RASCALS.

I stopped and watch them load their fat asses onto the bus, only to turn around and get BACK OFF THE BUS 2 blocks away. I managed to catch up with them before they had finished unloading.

I'm guessing the one was in the 450lb range, and the other was...considerably larger. They had to dismount their rascals to maneuver them onto the bus, and they were both sucking wind from the effort.

"Dreamtwister" I thought to myself, "those two won't last a month when the lights go out."

This led me to examine the other people in a new light. I started counting Rascals. 6 in four blocks. Hideously obese people - 24 in four blocks. Drug addicts - 11 in blocks. Terminally stupid people (You know the type, they're ubiquitous and you have NO IDEA how they make it through a day without falling into an open manhole) - I lost count. I came to an inescapable conclusion. The bulk of western society is too fat, lazy and stupid to survive on their own.

I used to give myself a 1 in 6 chance of survival. I think I can increase my estimate to about 1 in 2. Yay for me.

!!!

Where the hell do you live? (And by the way, how do you figure whether somebody is a drug addict?)

What are Rascals?

And I can usually tell with 90% certainty that a particular person is a drug addict however I am sure there are drug addicts that also look normal.

This is in Toronto. And when you've been living in a major city for long enough, you can spot the drug addicts a block away. It's pretty easy after a while.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Grifter', 'W')hat are Rascals?

This is a Rascal. Pretty sad, eh?

Late 20's?

Those are for old and/or disabled people!

(You know, didn't alot of people not live past 30 years of age 'back in the day 'when the human population had 12 kids and you would be lucky if half of them made it to adulthood?)

Yes, but "you would be lucky if half of them made it to adulthood" explains why. High infant mortality has a strong negative impact on average life expectancy. However, if you made it to (say) 18, you had a good chance of making it to old age.

Some people would think that weighing 450+ lbs IS a disability. I'm not one of them, but apparently our doctors are among them. "Good heavens, don't stop stuffing your face with cheeseburgers, you need a scooter!"

It's because of the way "life expectancy" is calculated. It's a mean average. Say you have 5 babies born today.

-One dies in childbirth
-One dies of smallpox at 4
-One dies in an industrial accident or something at 25
-One has a heart attack at 55
-One lives to a ripe old age of 88.

0+4+25+55+88/5=life expectancy of 34.4 years. On it's own it's not an entirely accurate representation, as it tends to lead people to the wrong conclusions. You have to look at the whole picture. Is there a war going on? What's the infant mortality rate? The birth rate? Poverty level? And a whole host of other factors.

This sort of thing is why I absolutely don't worry about "hordes" of people coming from the cities out into the countryside to "reap" us hicks.

City folks will stay in the cities, where food is, n stuff...

Ludi, I've personally bookmarked your location for when I need those neat solar panels and goodies you've hoarded. You'll be seeing me one day, but you may not see me coming.

Just joking, again. Or am I?
