Boy, how will civilisation survive without artifical turf and beach umbrellas?? 8O

Sorry, being facetious! Actually, the number of items on that list and their importance to modern life really brings the whole issue to life. Never mind filling your SUV, try living with a shortage of antiseptics and food preservatives. That is scary.

Why

Unread postby Cool Hand Linc » Wed 09 Jun 2004, 10:38:38

Why did you only post a partial list? Seriously!

If you then include the stuff that comes from natural gas. It really become huge! As if its not big enough without it.

Doesn't all electronics rely on directly on oil too?
Obviously, computer peripherals made of plastic will be stuffed without oil.

Bye bye internet.. :(

Chemical feedstocks comprise only few percents of oil consumption, everything else is transportation/heating/other energy. So there can be enough oil to supply chemical industry for century. Enough time to switch to other supplies.

So if only 40% of US oil consumption is transportion, is most of the rest really for heating?
I find that difficult to believe!! Especially since the plastics industry is just mammoth.

I wonder what the true breakdown is?

So, according to that graph, about 50% of oil use in the US is for transport and a very small pc for electrical generation. The rest was vague - what exactly was the 20% for "industrial" include? Is that heating or plastics or both? Shame it isn't more specific.
The residential part - which I guess is mostly heating oil - was a very small pc.

More than 40% is for transportation. According to the American Petroleum Institute, 46% of each barrel of oil goes to automobile gasoline. More goes to diesel fuel, aviation fuel, and marine diesel. And about 3% goes to asphalt - surely that counts as a transportation cost, too.

OK - I'm with that now!! I was originally relying on out of date information.

P.s. I would go and research the data breakdown myself but I feel I deserve a break after spending hours working out the sums for coal to oil conversions!! :)

Quote from plastic bag website: "Just 4% of crude oil consumption is used for all plastics, and only 2% for all films, of which plastic bags is a very small proportion. 85% of oil is burned as fuel or heating."

p.s. did some research myself and found the same article you refer to.

Also found information that another 3-4% of all oil consumption is for the manufacturing of plastics, the 4% figure referes to the amount of oil used as a feedstock for plastics.
So, that's a fair proportion - 7-8% in total. Clearly, transport and heating are the main users though.

How did we get to be arguing, ahem, debating about this again??!!
